times, when an infection in the
bladder or the kidney is chronic,
it is being kept up by the pres
ence of stones.
When ever a nervous woman
comes in says that she great
frequency of urination during
the day but not at all during
the night, I am almost certain
that she is facing some problem
that she cannot make up her
mind about. Usually, a little
questioning shows what this is,
and when she is ready to make
a- decision, she immediately is
well. If there is frequency of
urination by night as well as by
day; when there is burning on
urination, and when the urine
is cloudy, the person may have
an infection of the bladder. A
physician can tell what the trou
ble is by putting a few drops of
recently passed urine under the
microscope. Then he may see
many germs and pus cells.
Fortunately, today, we physi
cians have several good remedies
which tend quickly to clear up
an infection in the bladder or

Bell's Palsy
Many persons ask me what
Bell's palsy is. It is a weakening
of the muscles on one side of
the face, due usually to some
thing wrong with , the seventh
cranial nerve which supplies the
muscles. It comes out of the
skull through a little conduit
near the ear. Oftentimes the per
son tells of a recent exposure
of the side of the face to a cold
wind, but in many cases we
physicians do not know what the
cause was. Sometimes the cause
is a little injury due to a tiny
stroke up in the brain, and some
times it is due to something that
has gone wrong in the little
canal through which the nerve
comes out from the brain.
If a person is fortunate, his
paralysis will be slight and it

will quickly disappear. In some
cases in which the nerve is badly
injured it will have to grow out
again, and this will take many
montns. Sometimes recovery is
never quite complete, so that
always a physician can detect
mhe slight weakening of one
corner of the mouth. In rare
cases the paralysis does not clear
up, and then an operation can
be performed to lift up the
weaKened corner of the mourn
and to fasten it to the bone just
below the eye on that side.
Occasionally, a person who has
had one Bell's palsy will get
another. Only once in my life
did I see a man wno haa live
attacks. He certainly had bad
luck. His only good lortune was
that he recovered well from all
the spells.
In those cases in which, with
a paralysis ot one side of the
face, there come marked chang

ability, I suspect that the injury
was deep in the brain and not
out in the nerve. Oftentimes a
