Mental Health
Group Weighs
Counsel Plan
The possibility of organizing
a new family 'counseling service
for southern Oregon was dis
cussed Wednesday at a meeting
of the Jackson county mental
health committee. The discus
sion centered around the advan
tages of such a service to the
community.
Dr. Henry C. Schumacher of
San Francisco was a guest at the
meeting and answered questions
on how such a service could be
organized here. Dr. Schumacher
is medical director of the mental
health service, regional office of
the United States Public Health
service.
A family counseling service
could supplement the work of
the Southern Oregon Child
Guidance clinic, now in opera
tion, Dr. Schumacher pointed
out. Professional counselors
could help families with domes
tic trouble, welfare cases, han
dicapped children, aged people
and mental patients. Such a serv
ice would help to rehabilitate
families and eventually save
public funds, Dr. Schumacher
said.
Allen Hatch, chairman of the
mental health committe, has ap
pointed a group to explore the
possibility of a ' family counsel
ing agency for this area. Repre
sentatives from the public health
association, parent-teacher
groups, health department, coun
ty school office, juvenile court,
welfare department and United
Medford Crusade attended the
meeting. ,
