been quiet in the big, blue CBS
buildins on Sunset Boulevard
where old
fashioned radio still
marches o n.
But lately a
"new" pro
gram has cre
a t e d an up
roar. Studio B is
cluttered with
Aline Mosby weird sound
effect equipment. . . bright-eyed
actors hustle about. . . fan mail
is pouring into the front office.
CBS has revived "The Colum
bia Workshop," and it's giving
radio its most stimulating boost
since TV swept in and grabbed
the spotlight.
The workshop was started in
1936 to put on experimental,
arty, weird and sometimes
downright 1 o o n e y radio pro
grams. Orson Welles' "Man
From Mars"' was one.
TV Version Fails
The series was dropped in
1942 and revived for a year in
1946. An attempt to put it on
TV in 1952 failed. The network
exhumed the idea and launched
a new radio workshop series Jan.
27 with A 1 d u o u s Huxley's
"Brave New World."
Tonight the workshop pre
sents a story about a hi-fi set
that goes berserk and tunes in
on the neighbor's conversation.
In workshop tradition, the pres
entation will be unusual for "the
enormous radio." Instead of
background music, listeners will
hear murmuring voices of the
neigbhors.
Today producer-director Wil
liam Frotig happily sifted
through raving fan letters in his
office which, with its mobile
ana modern paintings, is
"avant garde" as the show.
Program Revived
"CBS decided to revive
program to get people to
about radio again,' ' he said.
"Money can't be made on it. It
never can be sold to a sponsor
or then it wouldn't be experi
mental any more.
"William Saroyan wants to do
a show for us. Orson Welles
might do a 30-minute monologue
of a man talking to a hawk.
