ployed by a
hospital as

v alter Alvarez Clan. Lidiei,
they learned that his only qual
ification for the job of taking
care of sick persons was that
he had once run a pet shop! He
told the hospital authorities that
he had been well educated, first,
at Columbia and later, in a med
ical school in Edinburg, Scot
land, but when the Deans of
these schools were asked about
him, they said he had never
studied with them.
In another hospital in the
same district a man who had
been employed as an anesthetist
turned out to be only a chiro
podist. As I said, this is like dis
covering that a pilot on an air
plane has never had any train
ing in the air, or like learning
that the captain of the ship one
is on has never been to sea!
Many persons may wonder
why there is such carelessness
in employing physicians, but
there is nothing puzzling about
it. Although we human beings
are very fussy about the train
ing of an air pilot or a ship's
captain, into whose hands we
are to place our lives, more than
half of us resent it when the
government attempts to examine
a man who says he is a physi
cian.. Curiously, if he really is
a physician, all of us believe
in being tough with him, and
giving him a very good examin
ation, but if ne is not a physician,
we agree with him that to exam

According to a note in Science
News Letter, Dr. Landrum B
Shettles, of Columbia University,
has shown that if he can get a
few drops of the fluid that bths
the fetus in the mother's womb
he man tell with the help of a
microscope what is the sex of
the child. The only catch in this
is that, as yet, there seems no
safe way of getting some of the
fluid until "the waters break'
shortly before the child is born.
Dr. Alvarez regrets he hasn't
the time in which to read or
answer requests for information.

Dore Schary conceived the idea

Hoffman recreated the battle
with the statues on the battle
field of the generals and soldiers
taking their "parts." Sound ef
fects of marching feet and boom
ing guns were added. Hoffman
achieved "motion" by quickly
cutting from one statue to the
other, from one gun to the next.
The director and his camera
man spent eight days on the
battlefield.
"The head of the Gettysburg
Park knows the battle inside and
sideways," Hoffman said. "Every
night we'd fight the battle with
him, and the next day we'd go
out and shoot what he told us."

Technique Revived
His technique of using quick
cutting and a moving camera to
tell the story, instead of dia
logue, has been the talk of Holly
wood. Actually it's an old tech
nique originated in the early
silent movie days but forgotten
by most present-day directors
who are too busy with dialogue
and wide scenes. The late Robert
Flaherty used it several years
ago in "The Titan."
