News About Books
From the Library
By MISS HELEN WEBSTER
Medford Librarian
A donation of $100 was made
to the Medford Public Library
last week by the Jackson Coun
ty Public Health association for
the purchase of books about
family life.
A list of 13 titles which the
association would like to have
available in the Medford Public
and Jackson County library was
also submitted, and these will
b? purchased immediately to
start the well-rounded collection
of books on this subject, which
the donation will make possible.
Others Invited
Other groups are invited to
participate in the same way to
build up subject collections in
which they are interested, thus
making additional books avail
able to all their members. The
library's limited funds for books
must be extended as impartially
as possible over hundreds of
subject interests, without spe
cialializing in any.
It buys general books on re
ligion, for instance, but cannot
attempt to cover the histories
and doctrines of the many de
nominations. However, it would
gladly accept gifts of from one
to five books of standard worth
on any of these.
Lodge Gift
Another organization which
has made a library donation re
cently is the Olive Rebekah
Lodge which, in memory of the
late Mrs. Carrie Mae Rickertt
Morand, is purchasing "The
Home Gardening Encyclopedia,"
for library circulation. The se
lection was made after consul
tation with the librarian as to
titles already in the library's
collection and new books avail
able. More advantageous pur
chase can usually be made in
this way, groups are advised.
Individual donations were re
ceived during March from Mrs.
W. M. Voter, Fred B. McKee,
Mrs. J. D. Althouse, Margaret
Hanawalt, Lucille Ames, and
Mrs. Harry L. Tilton. A total of
153 gift books were added to the
library this month, and 393 pur
chased books. Of the 546 total,
296 were new titles, 213 of them
adult. The list of these follows:

Fong Murder Trial
Recessed Saturday
Portland (U.R) The Fong
murder trial resumed briefly in
Circuit Court here Saturday and
then was recessed until Monday
when the defense was expected
to recall Pio Riego to the witness
stand.
Wey Him Fong is on trial for
the second time, charged with the
first degree murder of Diane
Hank, his 16-year-old babysitter.
Fong's wife has been convicted
of second degree murder in con
nection with the case but has
appealed.
Circuit Judge Frank J. Loner
gan denied a defense request to
have Riego disrobe in the judge's
chambers to determine if there
were any marks on his body. The
witness testified through a Fil
ipino interpreter that there were
no marks on his body and he re
plied "nobody" when Defense
Attorney John P. Hannon asked
him if police officers had struck
him.
Riego testified earlier that
Fong had threatened to kill him
if he went to the authorities with
the report that Fong wanted
Riego's help in disposing of a
body in the trunk of his car.
The state concluded question
ing of 29 of its own witnesses
Friday. Deputy District Attor
ney Howard Loneragn said he
hoped to complete the state's
case by the middle of next week.
Petitions Circulate
For Lt. Governor
Portland s'U.R) Petitions
aimed at creating the office of
lieutenant governor were being
circulated Saturday in Oregon
by the Oregon State Grange, the
Oregon Farmers Union and the
AFL-CIO.
The petitioners hoped to have
40,093 valid signatures on the
petition by July 3.
The initiative measure would
be a constitutional amendment
creating the lieutenant gover
nor's office with the person
elected next in line of succession
to the governor's chair.
Under the proposal, the lieu
tenant governor would be acting
i governor in event the state s
chief executive was out of the
state and he also would serve as
president of the Senate. His sal
ary would be not less than
$5,000 a year.
Moves to create the post of
lieutenant governor in Oregon
have been defeated by the
voters on four previous occa
sions. Thirty-nine states have
lieutenant governors.

Meeting of Interim
Elections Group Set
Salem (U.R) The Legislative
Interim Committee on Elections
will meet here at 10 a.m. Tues
day. Chairman Pat Lonergan of
Portland said major items to be
considered will be a research
memorandum covering voters'
pamphlets, initiative, referen
dum and recall and district elec
tions; and a preliminary study
draft of legislation intended to
provide the organizational
framework and aiew of the pro-j
cedural requirements of the rec
ommendations the committee
has approved.
The research memorandum
recommends that only one vot
ers' pamphlet be distributed to
each household. It is estimated
that this would save at least 35
per cent of the number of
pamphlets required. The pamph
let now goes to each registered
voter usually two or more to a
house.
