signed an agreement calling for
a "much higher level" of trade
between the two countries.
The new trade pact also calls
for closer scientific and techni
cal cooperation between the two
nations, authorities said.
It envisages the sharing of
tehnical skills, the exchange of
technical missions and the sup
ply of equipment and machinery.

I was just reading an article
by John Geiger, Special Science
writer, who has been visiting

talked to the
men there to
see what they
are doing, and
to find out

they have for the future. He
talked to Dr. C. P. Rhoads, the
director of the greatest cancer
institute in the world. He said,
"Ten years ago we had only the
most primitive knowledge. Not
so long ago, to dream of a pill
for cancer was regarded as a
sign of insanity. Now we have
several pills. They can cure
transplanted animal cancer out
right. True, the effect of these
pills in human cancer is feeble
and limited, but we can now
build on what we know."
As Dr. Rhoads said, today we
have a rational basis for going
ahead with research, and it looks
as if we can now make better
and better medicines with which
to restrain, at least temporarily,
the growth of cancer. It may
well be that before long we can
make chemicals which will cure
one or more of the several forms
of cancer.
The researchers believe that
they are now progressing stead
ily toward their goal. Unfortu
nately, they have to admit a dis
tressing fact which I wish more
persons would face. "The harsh
truth is that there is no cancer
curing drug right now. There
are no good remedies for ad
vanced cancer." What does this
mean? It means that the frantic
man whose beloved wife now
has cancer scattered all over her
has absolutely no justification
for .going to a cruel and ienor-
ant quack and giving him four
or five hundred dollars, cash
down. The quack knows no more
about cancer than the patient
does. If the quack had anything
that was of the slightest value,
the cancer research workers in
this country, and the govern-

Polio Story Series
The Mail Tribune will publish
next week a series of stories on
"The War Against Polio 1956."
It is an authoritative exposition
of preparations for the second
round of Salk inoculations as
the polio season approaches
again.
The dispatches were reported
and written by United Press
Washington Correspondent
Michael O Neill who won the
National Headliners award for
his reporting on polio during
1955.
They will report how much
vaccine is available, how safe it
is considered, how many shots
are advisable including the word
on this from Dr. Jonas Salk him
self. They will describe the in
credibly difficult job of making
the vaccine. They will tell how
to recognize and treat polio once
it strikes.
The series will appear Mon
day through Friday next week.

and ask the men if they thought
it would be worth while for me
to try some of the new forms
of treatment.
Epidemics of Serious Disease
Health officers are constantly
coming up against serious and
dangerous opposition from large
groups of people who hate physi
cians, medicines and particular
ly vaccinations and other pre
cautions against epidemic dis
eases.. Today, their powerful
argument is that a disease, such
as typhoid fever, diphtheria,
small pox, or tuberculosis,
which almost everyone had to
have 50 years ago, has now al
most disappeared and can be
forgotten
These benighted people are
terribly mistaken as is proved
every year by a flare-up some
where of some very dangerous
disease. I remember well when,
j on the West Coast, there was
a terrible epidemic of the black
plague in its pneumonic form.
This is a disease that can spread
like wild-fire and can kill al
most 100 per cent of the victims.
Recently, I read that in one
of the Southern states where
the children of many poor peo
ple managed to get by without
vaccination against diphtheria,
they had the start of a bad
epidemic.

authorities averted a bad epi
demic. A few weeks ago I mentioned
an epidemic of parathyphoid
fever traced to two handlers of
milk, and now I have to tell
of an epidemic of typhoid fever
in Minnesota. What does all
this mean? It means that there
are still enough bad germs and
viruses hiding here and there
in the country so that if we
men and women and our chil
dren are not kept properly vac
cinated and protected, and if
able health officers everywhere
do not keep constantly on the
watch, we could soon have ter
rible epidemics spreading
through the country.
Cancer and the Heart
Someone wants to know if
cancer ever attacks the heart.
Usually not. The heart is one
part of the body that is remark
ably immune to invasion by can
cer, and cancer practically never
starts in the heart.
There is another part of the
body that is remarkably immune
to cancer, and that is the duoden
um, or the first 12 inches of
the bowei. just below the stom
ach. This is good news to per
sons who suffer from a peptic
ulcer in the duodenum. They
do not have to fear that it will
some day turn into cancer.
