San Jose Man Buys
Radio Station KWIN
Ashland Douglas D. Kahle
of San Jose, Calif., has purchased
radio station KWIN, Ashland,
from Rogue Valley Broadcast
ers, Inc. An application for ap
proval of the transfer of owner
ship has been filed with the fed
eral communications commission
in Washington.
The application shows the sta
tion was sold for $50,000.
W. D. Miller of Klamath Falls
is president and owner of Rogue
Valley Broadcasters, Inc., pur
chasing the station several years
ago from Mark Hamaker of Ash
land. Kahle is general manager of
television station KN-TV in San
Jose. He is on a business trip
to Washington and New York
and could not be reached for
comment on plans for the station
here.

Many gardens are now in a
condition to be worked up and
the soils are now warm enough
to plant quite a variety of vege
tables. Before planting, be sure
the soil is thoroughly prepared
and either work in 5 pounds of a
complete fertilizer to each 100
square feet or place fertilizer
along-side of the rows using 1
pound of complete fertilizer to
40 feet of row. Place the fer
tilizer 2 inches to one side and
3 inches deep.
Some of our vegetable plants
such as head lettuce, spinach and
peas, must be planted in cool
weather as they tend to go to
seed as soon as the hot summer
weather sets in. A dozen head
lettuce plants for early lettuce
and a 25 foot row for later let
tuce, will keep a family sup
plied. The spinach should be
handled likewise; a 25 foot row
now and a 25 foot row in about
two weeks is sufficient.
Long Season
Onions should be planted now
as they require a long season in
which to grow to maturity and
attain a large size. Onion seeds
of the Sweet Spanish variety
should be planted so that the
young onion plants will be
spaced 2 inches apart. When the
onions are grown, they will not
only be touching, but pushing
each other somewhat to one
side. This is desirable in order
to attain high yield.
Onion maggots seem to be
coming more and more of a prob
lem each year and where this is
the case, steps should be taken
early to control them. A chlor
dane dust or spray should be
applied to the onion plants short
ly after the young onions emerge
through the soil. This should be
followed by a second dusting two
weeks later. Where onion mag
gots have been severe, a third
dust in another two weeks will
be necessary to give control.
Later in the year thrips may at
tack the onion plants and these
can be held in control by spray
ing or dusting with DDT. These
summer DDT dusts will also help
to maintain control of the onion
maggots throughout the summer.
The onion maggot is much more
of a problem in comercial fields
than it is in home gardens. Many
home gardeners have found that
they can grow onions with no
control measures at all, but if
some of the onion plants wilt
and die, it is probably caused
by onion maggots and control
measures should be applied.
