of the 1956 prospects of the
major league clubs.

Marion isn't making any predic
tions where his Chicago White
Sox will finish this year, but
every time he sees his new cen
terfielder, Larry Doby, come to
bat there is a wide grin on his
face.
"His power could make a big
difference," Marion says. "Had
we had his bat last year we
would have won the pennant
instead of finishing third, five
games behind the Yankees."
So, while Marty isn't worried
about power this season, he is
concerned about his pitching.
"We must come up with a
fourth starter," he pointed out.
"I'm satisfied with my bullpen,
that's what kept us up there
last year. But I have to find at
least another starter."
That starter will go along
with his big three left handers
Billy Pierce and Jack Harshman
and .right-hander Dick Donovan.
Pierce and Donovan won 15 each
last season, Harshman 11.
Has Fine Bullpen
Connie Johnson, who won
seven with the White Sox late
i the season after being called
up from Toronto; the veteran
Harry Byrd, who was 7-8 with
the Orioles Snd White Sox; and
rookie Jerry Dahlke, a 19-game
winner with Memphis, are the
leading possibilities for that
fourth starting spot.
Marty feels that in Dixie
Howell, Morrie Martin, Mike
Fornieles and Sandy Consuegra,
he"has "as good a relief crew as
there is in the league." Consue
gra also may be used to start
against certain clubs.
By getting Doby from Cleve
land Marion feels sure the. White
Sox Minnie Minoso in left with
Jim Rivera and Bob Nieman
two-platooning in fight, espe
cially at the start of the season.
For the veteran Cal Abrams,
John Bubba Phillips and Bob
Powell, a bonus player.
The only infield spot set is
second base where scrappy Nel
lie Fox will hold forth. Big
Walt Dropo hasn't looked too
sharp at bat, so Marion has been
playing the veteran George Kell,
normally a third baseman, at
first.

Rookie Sam Esposito, who hit
.281 at Memphis, has crowded

Probable starter for Medford
today will be Duane Sides on
the mound with Ray Hilton on
the receiving end of the battery.
Other starters will be Dick
McLoughlin, Larry Perkins, Gor
don Owsley, Jim Putney, Larry
Gober, Ed Rienkftig, and Ron
Peery.
Roger Gallaci and Steve
Shorey are also likely to see ac
tion. Henry Putney and Ernie
Tyler may .see service on the
mound in Saturday's game.
Kovenz says that the team has
lots of hustle and that four mem
bers of the basketball squad who
turned cut for basebal lonly last
week should serve to strengthen
the team.

couver defeated Portland, 11-10,
in a 10-inning exhibition game
featured by 31 hits, including
four homers.
Morlyn Holtzapple, Bob Caf
f rey and Jim Pisoni homered for
the winners and Sam Calderone
homered for Portland. Pisoni
scored the winning run in the
10th when he doubled, moved
to third on a fielder's choice and
scored on Gary Robin's sacrifice
fly.

At short, Marion is banking
on rookie Luis Aparicio, who
hit .273 at Memphis. Marion, a
star shortstop himself, is sure
Aparicio can field, but the ropkie
still has to prove he is a major
league hitter. Should Aparicio
fail to make it, the job will fall
to either Jim Brideweser or an
other rookie, Carl Peterson, a
.306 hitter at San Diego.
Sherman Lollar will be the
No. 1 catcher. Marion plans to
carry only two receivers so he
can keep 11 pitchers. That means
that Les Moss, who was with the
Orioles and White Sox last year,
and Carl Sawatski, the former
Cubs receiver who hit only .268
at Minneapolis, will fight it out
for the No. 2 spot.
Pitching is the big question
mark, and if the White Sox
come up with it, they figure to
be mighty tough.

May Ask McCoy
License Denial

Angeles matchmaker Baby Mc
Coy, accused of being involved
in about a dozen "fixed" fights
and splitting boxers' purses, to
day faced the almost certain pos
sibility state investigators would
recommend his license be re
voked. The portly matchmaker's at
torney, Jake Ehrlich, prominent
San Francisco criminal lawyer,
brought out the possibility
Thursday before a special com
mittee investigating California
boxing.
Ehrlich asked if the commit
tee had the power to recommend
that McCoy's license be revoked
and hearing Chairman Jack
Hanna replied that it had.
Ehrlich then told the commit
tee he wanted it known that
under the circumstances, "We
will not attempt to conduct a de
fense at this time."
He said his client would stage
a "vigorous defense" before the
State Athletic Commission "if
that body should meet to take
his license away."
Special counsel James Cox in
questioning McCoy attempted to
link him with alleged eastern
underworld figure Champ Segal
and to show that McCoy once
entered negotations to obtain a
half-interest in boxer Gil Ca
dilli's contract.
"Did you call Champ Segal
in New York?" Cox asked.
McCoy replied he did not re
member calling him "but maybe
I talked to him two or three
times in the last 10 years."
McCoy denied he had been a
co-manager of Cadilli.
