Jobs Open in Television
For Girls Willing To Make
Start at Bottom of Ladder
New York (U.R) There
are jobs open right now for girls
who want to break into TV, one
network personnel director said
today.
The only hitch a girl shoot
ing for a glamour career in TV
must be willing to start at the
bottom.
"We have about 15 jobs for
girls right no, who are willing
to start as secretaries or clerk
typists," said Marie McWilliams
of the American Broadcasting
company. "And I'd say that we
usually have that many open.
I'm pretty sure it's that way at
the other networks, too."
Miss McWilliams, a native of
New York City's Staten Island
who has chaperoned ABC's per
sonnel department for three
years, pointed out that a job in
the network cellar had its ad
vantages. "Usually," she said, "when a
jpung girl just ,$ut of school
comes in to see us, she doesn't
know what she wants to do. She
may know generally that she
wants to be in the creative end
rather than say, sales. But that's
about all.
"Working at a junior level job
gives a girl a chance to look
around and choose. She can use
her secretarial job as a stepping
stone to other jobs."
Although this may sound like
a shopworn formula. Miss Mc
Williams can offer case histories
at her own network to support
this view.
Time Out for Training
Perhaps the most outstanding
is Geraldine Zorbaugh, the gen
eral counsel for ABC and secre
tary of the corporation. She
started as a secretary at the net
work, took time out for legal
training and then came back to
work her way in to her present
exalted position.
Starting pay at a network, it
might be pointed out, isn't very
high, particularly, for a cave
dweller in New York City. A
new network secretary can only
expect to pull down S55 to $65 a
week. But, as Miss McWilliams
said, some girls have hiked their
status considerably after only
two or three years on the job.

What to Do
There Burns sounds like any
father who's faced with the prob
lem: "What to do with a son who
has trouble finding his niche in
life.
"Ronnie didn't know what he
wanted to do," explained Burns
in a fatherly tone as I sat with
the family in their comfortable
den.
"For a while he was a lifesav
er. Then it was surfboards. Then
he built a boat in the back yard.
"A lot of parents force their
kids to be what they, wished
they had been. I wanted Ronnie
to go to college presumably be
cause I didn't. He wanted him to
take up law. We had no idea
he wanted to be an actor.
"Last summer we didn't want
him on the beach for 10 weeks
so we suggested he take a dra
matic course at Pasadena Play
house just for experience. When
he called us he'd gotten the
lead in "Picnic" at the school
we were elated.
Performance Viewed
"We went to see his perform
ance and Gracie said, "He wants
to be an actor."
Burns paused, lit his usual ci
gar and continued: "He was
good. So I asked him if he want
ed to be on the show. We didn't
want to force him to be an actor."
Young Ronnie, who was sit
ting in the den watching his fa
ther talk, spoke up. "I was very
happy to get the job. I didn't
have to go back to college!"
"Children," concluded father
Burns, "find their natural
groove. Leave them alone.
They'll find what they want to
do."

Russian Fallout
Blamed a! Coos Bay
Coos Bay (U.R) Fallout from
a Russian atomic explosion was
believed responsible today for
an unusually high radioactive
reading in Coos county.
Byron Hansen of Bay Park
discovered the radioactivity late
Monday while operating his
Geiger counter 10 miles south
of Powers. He said he dug a hole
at the spot but got no reaction.
When he pulled up some of the
turf and tested it he again got a
high reading.
Gen. John Hargrave, Oregon
CD medical officer, said the
reading was only about one
tenth of the amount needed to
get worried about.
The most affected area cov
ered about 10 square miles.
State civil defense head
quarters was sending a man to
check the area, although offic
ials said there was no cause for
alarm.
Last known atomic explosion
was last week when Western of
ficials said a nuclear device had
been exploded in Siberia.

Casper N. Custer today hunted
a name for their newest daugh
ter. The little girl, born Mon
day, has nine sisters and the
Custers were just about out of
girls' names.
Custer, an automobile sales
man, said the name he and his
wife had picked out for their
first child still wouldn't fit. It
was John Joseph.
