ed. She advised those of us who
can see to use our eyes as if
tomorrow we might be blind
We should listen with delight to
the music of voices, to the songs
of birds, and to the mighty
strains of orchestras. We should
smell with pleasure the perfume
of flowers, and we should taste
with great relish each morsel of
food. Let us make the most of
our senses, and let us glory in
all Itie pleasure and beauty that
life opens up to us.
The other day in my office
a friend, well indoctrinated in
the present-day fad of denying
that man; in his mental develop
ment, follows the well-known
laws of genetics, which are ac
cepted and used by every breed
er of animals, was scholding me
a bit for believing in the heredity
of mental disease. In answer I
read him the following history

The result is
Dr. Hurlock he has never
taken any responsibility for his
possessions. Every morning,
while I am getting breakfast, he
will call me to find this or that
thing he needs to finish dressing.
When he comes home from the
office, he just drops his coat, hat,
papers, and anything he has been
carrying and if I don't pick them
up and put them away, they will
stay there until he is ready to
use them again. We have two
children, 6 and 8 years old. They
don't see why they should put
away their things when their
father doesn't. I am having so
much trouble with them that I
am constantly after them to put
their things away but end up
doing it myself. Don't you think
people should take some respon
sibility for their things?" Mrs.

(A) I certainly do think people
should be responsible for their
possessions or pay the penalty of
losing them. You have been too
indulgent with your whole fam
ily and this has made too much
work for you.
Explain this to your husband
and emphasize how he is setting
a bad example for the children.
Surely he will see he is not being
fair to you or the children by
letting you carry the burden he
and they should be carrying.
Arrange Pick-up Time
Then, when you have his prom
ise to cooperate, call a family
gathering and explain to the
children that each memher of
the family will have to do his
Dit irom now on. Each day, have
a "pickup" time to take care of
all the odds and ends that have
not been put away as the day
progressed.
If, after a reasonable time,
you find things are no better,
give the whole family the warn
ing that things left lying around
will be picked ud bv vou and
returned to their owners only
after a fine has been paid. Your
children and your husband wjll
quickly discover that careless
ness can be costly and this nav
give them the needed incentive
to reiorm.

that I had just taken from a
mildly psychotic woman who
had consulted me about a num
ber of nervous symptoms. She
was very unhappy because her
husband was leaving her. He
could no longer put up with her
queer ways. As he said, she and
her two sisters ;ud never adjust
ed well to life. She had been
in the hands of a psychiatrist
off and on since she was 17.
One of her sisters, also, early
in life became mentally upset,
and the other one had always
been a problem to the family.
The father of these three wom
en seemed pretty normal but
one of his sisters for years was
in and out of a mental hospital.
His other sister was an eccentric
person, too queer ever to hae
a beau. The father's father be
came demented in later life, and
the father's mother, never quite
normal mentally, eventually
went insane. Her father com
mitted suicide and her mother
was a difficult and very opin
ionated person. My patient's son
a difficult child to handle
wet the bed until he was six.
Many in Family Successful
The only encouraging feature
about this family was that many
of the members, in spite of their
bad heredity, remained sane
enough to be successful, prosper
ous, and respected members of
the community.
I need hardly say that a per
son with a poor nervous inherit
ance does not have to become
upset mentally. Often he (or she)
does not seem to have inherited
much of the tendency to mental
trouble; or when he inherits
some of it, he fights.it off suc
cessfully. The wise man lives
as sanely as he can, and then
he is likely to stay sane.
In Los Angeles the other day
I was happy to meet a group
of lay persons who have banded
together with the purpose of
helping their fellow Californians
to learn about the problems of
men tar illness and to face these
problems honestly and sensibly.
We don't care which side
you're on, you'll still have
to accept this dental fact.
Four, out of five cavities

Westside Cooking club met at
Everett Gibson's home March
7, "at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Helen
Barnes presented a letter from
the governor and one from the
president concerning 4-H club
week.
We judged cakes for texture
and quality. Clinton Gibson
gave a demonstration on mak
ing salads. Linda Gibson gave
a demonstration on the right
way to measure liquid and dry
ingredients. Mrs. Gibson served
refreshments.

4, at 7:30 p.m. at Colleen Fran

Wife Talks Mate Out
Norwalk, Calif. U.R) For
three hours a 64-year-old mental
hospital patient sat atop a 125
foot water tower yesterday and
threatened a suicide leap.
Then a silver-haired woman
spoke slowly over a loudspeaker
system:
"Fred, I love you, come
down," said Mrs. Ethel Ranney,
60. "Please come down. Every
thing will be all right. I love
you so very much."
Her husband, Fred Ranney,
64, a patient at the Metropolitan
State hospital, remained atop
