To Aid
Program
The Great Decisions program
has been endorsed by the board
0 of the League of Women Voters
of Medford as being an educa
tional oportunity in the field of
international relations, accord
ing to Mrs. Robert Hiatt, presi- i
dent.
However, due to league pol
icy, the organization cannot
actively engage in a study of
internati&nai or national scope
unless it is on a nationwide basis
and is thoroughly done with spe
cific legislation in mind, Mrs.
Hiatt states.
Among league members plan
ning to take part in the Great
Decisions program are two
board members, Mrs. Jim Bar
nard, and Mrs. O. E. Kellogg.
They will form discussion groups
in their areas and will attend
the training session at the Med
ford High School library Satur
day, March 24, at 2 p.m.

said they will follow the- pro
gram individually and will mail
the blanks in as they complete
their coverage of the material
supplied by the Great Decisions
- program commitee, without ben
efit of group discussion. These
fact sheet sets and blanks to be
filled and mailed to the local
chairman, Don Hansen, Frank
lin Building, Medford, are on
sale at the Chamber of Com
omerce office, $1 for a set of
eight.

For Cebu Swamp
Mrs'. Minnie Steele, Spring
field, Ore., grand gila monster
of the Military Order of the
Lizards, United Spanish War
Veterans auxiliary, will install
officers for Cebu swamp at a
meeting set for Sunday, March
25, in Grants Pass.
The meeting will be held at
the home of Mrs. Mabel Breita
meyer at 1 p.m. A covered dish
dinner0 will be followed by
initiation and installation follow
ing. Mrs. Clara Wallis, gila mon
ster, will preside. Mrs. Mabel
Nicholson is gila monster-elect.
Medford members attending
the meeting are to take salads
and desserts for the dinner.
Duplicate Bridge Cub
Names Winning Pairs
Mrs. Jerry Mernin and Roy
Pruitt scored 80 points to win
first place at the last meeting
of Medford Duplicate Bridge
club. The club plays each Tues
day night at Moose hall.
Mrs. R. J. Conroy and Mrs.
William Kennedy took second
place, scoring 77 points, and in
third place were Mrs. E. L.
Miller and Miss Isobel Stuart
with 75V2 points.
Mrs. Jack Mitchell and Berg
Marten were in fourth place
with 72 Vz points.

6:45 p.m. and Mr. Radcliffe will

Pianist, Soprano
On Air Programs
For Palm Sunday
Walter Gieseking, considered
one of the greatest pianists of
this time, will play his first
broadcast of the season when he
appears as soloist with the New
York Philharmonic - Symphony
Sunday, March 25. The program
will be broadcast over Radio
Station KYJC in Medford from
11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Guido Cantelli will conduct
the orchestra in the second of
four broadcast performances as
guest conductor.
Mr. Giesking will perform the
Beethoven "Concerto No. 5 in E
Flat Major" known as the "Em
peror" concerto. Following the
broadcast the 'pianist will leave
New York for a number of re
citals and orchestral perform
ances throughout the country.
Maestro Cantelli will open the
program with the Vivaldi "Con
certo Grosso" for string orches
tra and the concert will close
with "Don Juan," tone poem by
Richard Strauss. '
In observance of Palm Sun
day, a special program will be
broadcast for the Woolworth
Hour ori the same station begin
ning at 1 p.m. Alex Templeton
will play the world premier of
his new "pocket-sized" "Sonata."
Miss Nelli Herva, Metropolitan
Opera soprano will sing the dra
matic aria "Pace, Pace, Mio Dio"
from Verdi's opera, "La Forza
Del Destino" and Cesar Franck's
"Panis Angelicus."
As Palm Sunday numbers,
Percy Faith and the Woolworth
orchestra and chorus will intro
duce Mr. Faith's new arrange
ments of the spiritual "Were
You There When They Crucified
My Lord," and "The Holy City."

Miss Kelly Plans
To Attend Rites
Of Bridesmaid
New York OJ.R) Grace Kelly
will attend the wedding of one
of her bridesmaids before be
ginning a final 12 days of trous
seau shopping for her own mar
riage to Prince Rainier III of
Monaco.
The .actress returned to her
Fifth avenue aoartment from
Hollywood Thursday night and
said on her arrival she would
attend actress Rita Gam's wed
ding. Miss Gam, who will be
one of Miss Kelly s bridesmaids
at the ceremony April 19 in
Monte Carlo, is marrying Thom
as H. Guinzberg, 29, a publish
ing executive.
A relative of the bridegroom
said the wedding would take
place this afternoon and that
the couple planned to leave for
Europe tonight by plane. ;
Miss Klly told reporters who
met her at the airport that she
would spend most of the time
shopping for her trousseau be
fore she sails for Monaco on
April 4.
"I've had no opportunity to do
any shopping because I've been
working so hard on the picture,"
she explained. She recently com
pleted the film "High Society"
for MGM studios, which may be
her last movie.
"I have not asked for a re-

lease from my MUM contract,
she said when reporters asked
about her movie plans. "I'm tak
ing a year's leave of absence."
The prince had said earlier
that she would not make any
more movies, and the 26-year-old
actress emphasized that his
word will be final.
"I agree with whatever he de
cides," she said.
The future princess patiently
answered reporters' questions.
She admitted she was a little
nervous and "very excited"
about her wedding, then added
wearily:
"The prince and I are awfully
tired reading about ourselves,
and we .thought other people
would be also."

Eagle President
To Visit Medford
Maurice Splain Jr., Oil- City,
Pa., international president of
the Fraternal Order of Eagles,
will be a guest in Medford Mon
day, March 26. Mr. Splain will
address members of Crater Lake
aerie, Medford, at a meeting in
the lodge hall Monday night, ac
cording to Floyd Leith, aerie
president.
Mr. Splain, a former president
of the Pennsylvania state aerie,
is now its secretary. He is also
national membership director of
Eagles.
The Eagles lodge has more
than 900,000 members in the
United States, Canada, Alaska,
Hawaii and the Philippines.
The officer will speak on
membership and civic and com
munity program of the Eagles
lodge.

Eagle Point At the last meet
ing of Eagle Point Lions aux
iliary members voted to buy
two transfusion standards for
Rogue Valley Memorial hospital.
The meeting was held at the
home of Mrs. Ed Greenwood and
Mrs. Vern Bonebrake, president,
conducted the business meeting.
The nominating committee re
ported, and Mrs. Raymond Tras-
ham was appointed to represent
the group on the PTA-Teenage
organization.
The auxiliary also voted spon
sorship of a Camp Fire Group
to be led by Mrs. Dale Acker
man, assisted by Mrs. Merle Mc-
Graw.
Members of the board will
meet March' 26 at the home of
Mrs. Hoyl Jordan at 7:30 p.m
Nurses to Hear
Talk on Cancer
Dr. Christian P. Hald, Ash
land, will speak for a meeting of
Jackson County Licensed Prac
tical Nurses' association Monday,
March 26. It will be held at
8:30 p.m. in Sacred Heart Hos
pital recreation room.
Dr. Hald's subject will be can
cer, and he will illustrate his
lecture with x-ray pictures and
other material.
Mrs. Sarah Rutherford will
follow, and refreshments will be
served.

Gold Hill The Jackson Coun
ty Health association meeting
was well attended by the Gold
Hill members. Present were Mrs.
Arthur Boye, Mrs. J. G. Kofahl,
Mrs. Roy Cameron, Mrs. Harry
Quinn, Mrs. Ted Shoenemann,
Mrs. George Smith, Mrs. Paul
Molloy, Mrs. Ken Fluck and
Mrs. Thomas Gray. The mem
bers especially enjoyed the
speech by Jay Corwin, Hinshaw,
Calif., who spoke on the diseases
of the chest.
The next regular meeting of
the Gold Hill Unit will be April
3 at the home of Mrs. Treba
Jones, with co-hostesses Mrs.
Paul Molloy and Mrs-. Delos'
Walker.
Mr. and Mrs. John Jaksch on
the Old Stage road have been
entertaining Mrs. Jaksch's moth
er, Mrs. Charles Streiplang, of
Bakersfield, Calif. Mrs. Streip
lang's visit has been extended by
a bout of the flu.
- The cleanup date for the Rock
Point Cemetery is Saturday,
March 24. Those attending are
asked to bring tools to work
with, and their own lunch. Cof
fee will be served by the Rock
Point Cemetery committee.
Gail and Douglas Smith are
home for spring vacation from
Oregon State college. Gail, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Skyram, is a freshman, and
Douglas, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Lawrence Smith, is a junior.
Both are specializing in elemen
tary education.
Also home for vacation are
Jerry Eskew, freshman at Ore
gon State, and Beth Eskew, sen
ior at Southern Oregon college.
Before returning to school they
are going to Long Beach, Calif.,
to visit friends.
Phyllis Boye, who is employed
by a Central Point Lumber Co.,
and her brother, Bill Boye, who.
is a sophomore at SOC, have
gone to North Hollywood to visit
their brother. George Boye, and
family. They are the daughter
and son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl
Boye on the North Pacific high
way. Mrs. M. D. Freeland on the
Pacific Highway north is wear
ing a splint. It happened when
she tripped, fell, and broke her
arm.
March 14 a group of Mrs.
Ernest Gregory's friends gather
ed at her home to help her cele
brate her birthday. Mr. and Mrs.
M. D. Freeland, Mr. and Mrs.
Roy Cameron, Mr. and Mrs.. Er
win Hoffman, Mr. and Mrs. Ko
fahl, - Mrs. Effie Birdseye and
son, Glenn. The evening was
spent playing pinochle and ca
nasta with the evening terminat
ing with a huge birthday cake.
Operation Icicle . was enjoyed
by three Explorer Scouts from
Gold Hill, Willard Waterhouse,
Sammy Collins and Richard
Bickel. They admit that they
had no- idea that the rescue was
not real and was staged.

an interesting visit when they
attended the Hobby show given
by the veterans at Camp White.
