some persons can die of fright
at the start of an operation, it is
advisable that the child be put
to sleep without a fright or a
struggle.
Today, this is being done with
the help of a toy rabbit or other
such animal whose face is stud
ied by the child as an anesthetic
emerges from a tube running
from a tank to the toy and out
through the mouth of the ani
mal. The child breathes the gas
and is asleep before he realizes
what is happening to him.
This is a good beginning, and
now more and more efforts
should be made to avoid fright
ening children and adults in hos
pitals. It is not a pleasant exper
ience even for an adult to be
wheeled alone into an operating
room filled, with frightening in
struments and apparatuses. Too
often there is no one there who
knows him and can greet him
and put him at ease.
Head Noises
A man of 83 just tells me that
he has had head noises for five
years. They sound like birds
twittering and steam escaping,
"I have consulted five high-priced
nose and ear specialists with
no relief "
This man has a feeling that
the doctors ought to have told
him when he came in that they
could not do anything for him
because this would have saved
him much money. I suspect that
the doctors would have liked to
do this. One trouble with such
behavior is that usually patients
do not understand that the doc
tor is very wise, very honest
and very kind. They tend to
leave with the idea that he is
stuDid, or uninterested.

the time in which lo read or an
swer requests for information.

Oregon is receiving S27.179.07
for its share of payments for
mineral leasing of federal land
for the first half of fiscal year
1956, according to Secretary of
Interior Douglas McKay.
Twenty-two states and Alaska
this week received U.S. treasury
checks totaling S10,950,728.10,
which is 37V2 per cent of
S29.201.942.64 in bonuses, roy
alties and rentals from mineral
leasing.
The July 1-Dec. 31, . 1955 re
ceipts were slightly down from
the Sll,016,802.56 share of the
529,378,140.16 total mineral col
lection for the same period in
1954.
