Making Own Ammo
For Smith Shotgun
There was nothing in the
place either of us wanted, ap-!
parently, and I was already half
way to the door when I heard
Charley ask to see the gun in
the corner.
"That for sale, too?" he asked,
and the incredulous note in his
voice swung me around fast.
"Sure is," the owner said,
"but you can't buy ammunition
for it. Least, 'I haven't seen any
for years."
There was good reason why.
The gun was an eight gauge
shotgun. I had used a ten but
never even seen an eight before.
0"Why it's an L. C. Smith,"
Charley said, studying the en
graving on the barrels, "and it
balances beautifully."
It did, too. Though the wea
pon weighed a fraction over 14
pounds, its 38-inch barrels
iwung easily on an imaginary
target. The stock was a mignifi
cent piece of Circassian walnut.
Its beauty and the restrained na
ture of the engraving on the
teel told me instantly that here
FORGOTTEN STAMP IN WALLET STARTS BOY ON HOBBY
"I didn't know you people
were stamp collectors," I said,
picking upDa Liberian air mail
tamp from the floor.
"We aren't," said Jane, and
then, with a quick look at the
olive-green oblong, "I gave that
to Willie this morning. I had
found it in an old pocketbook
of Jack's I threw out. It was one
he had while stationed in Mon
rovia just before the war."
' "It looks as if Willie didn't
think much of it," I said, lay
ing the stamp on the table.
Jane didn't have a chance to
answer me. At that moment Wil
lie burst into the room.
"Where's that stamp you gave
me, Mom. I can't find it any
where." Jane looked calmly at her
nine-year-old son and started to
admonish him about being scatter-brained.
0
"Okay, Mom," he said. "Okay!
But this is important. I've got
NEW CONSTRUCTION UNEARTHS 1849 $10 OREGON COIN
"It's a deal," Frank said, giv
ing me a wink and going to the
afe, "I'll take it, but how did
you happen to get the coin?"
"Well," said the seller, a rath
er distinguished looking man in
a well cut suit of banker's gray.
"I got it because of my extraor
dinary ability and years of prac
tice as a sidewalk superinten
dent. "It was about two years ago
when they were excavating the
foundations of a new building
right on the edge of what used
to be San Francisco's Barbary
Coast.
"I was on my way to call on
a client, but the opportunity for
a few minutes of intensive su
perintending was too good to
pass up. It was a small job, and
they hadn't erected a board
fence as they do on the bigger
ones, confound them.
"So I just stood there watch
ing them load dirt and rock in
to the dump-truck.
"Well, while I was .standing

was a gun that had been made
to order.
"How much do you want for
it?" Charley asked.
The owner demanded S100
which Charley paid after a
show of resistance.
"What are you going to do
with it," I asked when we got
into the car. "It'll kick a dozen
mules if you ever get any am
mo for it."
That was all right with Char
ley. He'd get the ammo if he
had to have it made, which is
what he did. And one day last
fall I saw him pull a goose out
of the sky at a good 90 yards.
He used seven drams of nitro
and two ounces of No. 4's.
"It's really a wonderful gun,"
he said proudly, "and it ought
to be. I've found out it cost four
hundred fifty dollars when it
was made back in 1906."
He offered to let me try it,
but "I refused.
"And you know," he went on,
"it's worth even more today
I've already had one chance to
sell it for five hundred dollars."
to find that stamp. I was just
over at Kit's house and looked
it up in his catalogue, and it's
worth a lot of money, and . .
The words were tumbling out
of him at near machinegun
speed, but at that point I cut in
"I found the stamp on the
floor," I said, handing it tq him,
"Now tell me how much it's
worth."
"Gee. thanks, Mr. Gage," he
said,- moving towards the door,
"The book says its worth one
hundred twenty-five dollars, but
I want to check it carefully."
And he was gone.
He was correct. The three
cent stamp of 1938 issue had a
black surcharge on it that read
"First Flight Liberia-U.S. 1941.
50c." And it was worth $125 un
used or $75 used.
Thanks to discovery of the
stamp his father stuck in his
pocketbook one day and forgot
to use, the youngster is now a
confirmed stamp enthusiast.
there , one shovel let go too
soon and part of its load missed
the truck. I watched it hit the
ground. There were a couple of
pieces of old boards in it floor
ing, I suppose and one of them
kind of bounced over towards
me, and I spotted the glint of
gold in it and picked it up.
"Thats' it, and it was this
piece right here."
He picked the coin up, looked
at it again and handed it to me.
It was a $10 gold piece, one of
those put out by the Oregon Ex
change company in 1849.
The O. T. for Oregon Terri
tory, and the beaver on the face
of the coin were quite clear.
"I don't like to sell it," he
said, "but I really shouldn't car
ry it around, as I've been doing.
And besides, that seven hundred
and fifty dollars will come in
handy. My daughter's getting
married and it will make a nice
present."
