tions for Pacific Greyhound
drivers and station agents in
seven Western states, supported
by a 95 per cent strike vote of
the union membership, met with
company offftials today in an
attempt to agree on a new con
tract. The old contract expired
March 2, and the Amalgamated
Motor Coach Employes Union
announced last night that the
overwhelming majority of its
3300 members in California,
Oregon, Nevada. Utah, Arizona,
New Mexico and part of Texas
have agreed to strike action, if
necessary, to obtain a new one.
Meanwhile, strike ballots
were being counted in Portland
q from 1,100 employees of North
west Greyhound Lines working
in Washington, Idaho and part
of Montana. Thg results were ex
pected late today or tomorrow.
Negotiations broke down Feb.
15 with Pacific Greyhound, but
the old contract was extended
until today by mutual consent
of the company and the union.
O The union seeks a 10 per cent
wage increase, company contrib
ution of $17.50 a month per man
for a health and welfare pro
gram, increased vacations and
changes in operating conditions.
Dr. Habegger Named
Head of College
Portland U.R) Dr. Edison
Habegger of Van Nuys, Calif.,
has been elected president of
Cascade college here.
Dr. Habegger, who comes to
the college from serving as as
sociate pastor of the Village
Church S Burbank, Calif., will
take ofce about June 1. He suc
ceeds Dr. C. J. Pike.
Cascade college is located in
the north district 'of Portland
and is an interdenominational
liberal arts college with about
220 students.
LA Girls Take Over
City Offices for Day

district attorney was lawless but
Kit Carson kept order as the
sheriff.
Alice Lawless replaced Dist.
Atty. S. Earnest Roll and Kit
Carson took over for Sheriff Eu
gene W. Biscailuz Tuesday as
part of the city's "girl's day"
activities for high school students.
Norblad Lashes Back
At Howard Morgan
Portland (U.R) Rep. Wal
ter Norblad lashed back today
at Howard Morgan, Democratic
state chairman, to charges that
he was forced out of the Ore
gon gubernatorial race by pro
mise of political reward.
In a letter to Morgan, Nor
blad said he had been informed
of Morgan's charge, "attribut
ing my withdrawal from the
governor's race to a promise or
reward of some sort offered to
me and to a political clique forc
ing me out."
"I assure you that you are
wrong on both counts," Norblad
said. "My political actions have
always been of a very independ
ent nature and ' no clique or
group approached me directly
or indirectly regarding my
withdrawal."
Norblad reiterated that he
stood by what he had previously
said, that his decision was based
on numerable requests from
leaders in both the executive
and congressional fields in
Washington, plus those of many
plain citizens in his district who
did not wish him to throw
away his experience and senior
ity in congress. " ' .

Man Severely Burned
Because of Modesty
Omaha OJ.R) A 64-year-old
Omaha man suffered severe
burns Tuesday when modesty
prevented him from permitting
a neighbor woman from remov
ing his blazing clothing.
Charles Mislevec was in seri
ous condition at Veterans hospi
tal here Wednesday morning
with severe hirj and leg burns
Mislevec was tending a weed
fire when his clothing ignited.
A neighbor, Miss Mary Vopalka,
saw the man's clothing afire and
rushed to his aid.
She smothered the fire in his
outer clothing with her coat,
then pulled off the smouldering
overalls, jumper and shirt Mis
levee wore.
But when she tried to re
move his burning underwear,
Mislevec said "Don't take it all
off."
Miss Vopalka related "I said,
'Oh, to hell with it, and put my
jacket over him and ran to a
nearby tavern for help."
Ross Vazzano assisted Miss
Vopalka in removing Mislevec's
remaining clothing, which had
burst into flame while she was
summoning aid.
"It was the only thing to do,
pride or no pride," she said.
"I'd do it again if I had to."
Two Children Rescue!)
From Smoky Home
Portland (U.R) Firemen
last night rescued two children
from a smoke-filled apartment.
Firemen Harold Olson and
Sam Soter carried the children
Patricia, 2, and Lili Davidson, 5
months, from a second floor
apartment by ladder. The chil
dren suffered mild smoke in
halation. The parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Davidson, were not
injured.
Firemen said the smoke came
from a basement fire in the
three-story apartment building
The fire was put out before it
could spread to the upper floors.

Local Barbers
Hold X-ray Drive
More than 50 barbers are par
ticipating in a project to help
protect the health of their cus
tomers by having chest x-rays,
according to the x-ray commit
tee of the Jackson County Pub
lic Health association.
The community-service proj
ect is sponsored by the local
barbers union. A number of the
barbers visited the x-ray clinic
at Sacred Heart hospital last
week with others scheduled to
go to the Thursday afternoon
clinics during the next few
weeks.
"We very much appreciate
the cooperation of the barber's
union in our effort to x-ray
every adult in the county to re
veal tuberculosis, early lung
cancer, heart' trouble and other
chest conditions," L. O. Boomer,
chairman for the x-ray commit
tee stated.
The x-ray clinic is open each
Thursday afternoon and the first
Wednesday evening of each
month at Sacred Heart hospital.
Remodeling Contract
Awarded Salem Firm

of Control yesterday approved
a low bid of Slll,828 by Robert
Forster and Son, Salem, for re
modeling the state agricultural
building here.
Remodeling also must be ap
proved by the State Emergency
Board before construction can
begin.
Remodeling will be confined
mostly to the first and second
floors.

Colorado Senator Will
Run If He's Nominated
Washington U.R) Sen. Eu
gene D. Millikin of Colorado,
one of the Senate's senior Re
publicans, has announced he will
run for a fourth term if the
state GOP nominating conven
tion wants him.
Millikin has been ailing since
the start of the present session.
He appeared on the floor in a
wheelchair last week. He said,
however, that he has been "get
ting good word" from his doctors.
Priest Angry When
Car Hit by Another
Messina, Italy (U.R) A
priest hopped out of his car last
week end when his car was hit
by another driver.
"You don't know how to
drive," said the priest, .looking
at his crumpled mudguard.
"Let me introduce myself,"
said the driver of the other car.
"I am Eugenio Castellotti."
Both men burst out laughing.
Castellotti is Italy's leading
automobile racing driver.

Fort Rock Residents
Protest Article
Fort Rock, Ore. (U.R) Indig
nant settlers of Lake county's
Fort Rock basin today were
starting legal action against a
state publication.
Ranchers were unhappy about
an article in a recent issue of
"Oregon's Agricultural Pro
gress," published four times a
year by the agricultural experi
ment station at Oregon State col
lege. They want to stop publica
tion of another article they say
is coming up.
Named in a complaint to be
filed today in Lakeview were
Oregon State College, the State
Board of Higher Education, Ore
gon State College, experiment
station and the editor of the pub
lication. It was charged that a feature
article in the 1955 winter edi
tion was ' "highly critical and
damaging to the Fort Rock val
ley." Specifically, the legal ac
tion seeks to block further ar
ticles about Fort Rock in the
publication. Plaintiffs said a
similar article was being pre
pared for the spring issue.
Coffee Bushes Decline
In Numbers in Brazil
Rio de Janeiro (U.R) The
number of coffee bushes in Bra
zil has declined bv some 500
I million in the last 20 years, the
I Brazilian Agricultural Society
reported Tuesday.
The nationwide decrease oc
curred despite the growth of
coffee plantations in Parana
state in the past 14 years, the
report said. No reason was given
for the decline in other parts of
the country.

Has Been Postponed
Salem (U.R) Hearings in
Roseburg and Medford on the
Southern Pacific's abandon
ment of passenger service to
Ashland have been postponed.
The hearings in the two south
ern Oregon cities had originally
been scheduled for this week.
The new dates set by Public
Utilities Commissioner Charles
Heltzel . are April 25 and 26.
Roseburg will be the site of the
first day's hearing when the
commissioner will hear com
plainants. : The railroad will present its
side of the argument at a later
time to be determined later.
Egan Brothers Win
$32,000 in Quiz Show

brothers of Hartford, Conn., re
tired with $32,000 winning last
night on a television quiz show.
James L. and William E. Egan,
both lawyers, turned down a
chance at the S64.000 question
after getting within one step . of
the jackpot on a series of ques
tions ranging from speUing to
Shakespeare.
They said they'd split the
money, pay their bills, give some
to charity and consider the
whole experience very worth
while. .
Americans Increase
Champagne Drinking

Thirsty Americans bought 2,558,
016 bottle- of champagne last
year, some 400,000 more than
the year before, the French
champagne committee reported
Tuesday.
The committee said the 19 per
cent increase in American con
sumption compared with a 13
per cent increase for the rest of
the world.
