Dickey Announces
GOP Candidacy
For Convention
Robert ' Dickey, Medfprd at
torney, today announced he is a
candidate for delegate to the Re
publican national convention.
Dickey, who earlier this week
was appointed county chairman
for the Easter Seal campaign,
has lived in southern Oregon all
his life. He received his bache
lor of science degree in mathe
matics from Pacific university,
Forest Grove, and his LLB from
Georgetown university, Wash
ington, D.C.
Prior to returning to Med
ford, he was a Washington cor
respondent for several Oregon
newspapers. He was employed
by the United States Senate for
a while.
Practicing Lawyer
He has been a practicing law
yer in Medford for five years,
about two years of which he
served as deputy district attor
ney. He served in the Navy during
World War II and was dis
charged from the Naval reserve
as a lieutenant. Dickey is an ac
tive member of the Crater Lions
club, the Elks club, the Masons
nd a Shriner.
He lives at 53 South Modoc
ave., is married and the father
of two children.
Army Reserve Units
Set Firing Matches
The 1956 Sixth Army area

Army reserve teams will be held
at Camp White Sunday, March
11, headquarters for the Ore
goiT)military district has an
nounced. Purpose of the matches is to
improve marksmanship, develop
esprit de corps and provide re
servists with a chance to qualify
for excellence marksman badge.
A rifle and pistol team will be
selected to represent southern
Oregon in the Sixth Army
matches at Ft. Lewis, Wash., in
April.
All firing will be done with
regulation ammunition, using
.30 caliber rifle and the .45 cali
ber pistol.
Young men interested in a
place on Oregon's army reserve
teams are encouraged to contact

Portland Firebug
Flees Criminal Ward
Salem U.R) Richard Kidd, a
court - committed firebug from
Portland, escaped from the state
hospital's criminal ward late
last night, state police reported.
. Hospital attendants told po
lice Kidd sawed through bars
and climbed down a third-floor
window with the use of sheets
he had tied together. He was
still at large early today.
Kidd, who was classified as
dangerous, was believed armed
with a knife. He was committed
after Portland fires were set in
late 1954 in a furniture ware;
house, a supply firm, hotel and
tavern.

Paper Keys to Urge
Removing Car Keys
Paper keys to remind motor
ists to remove car keys when
the vehicle is unattended will
be placed on car windshields
in Medford tomorrow by the 20
30 club, according to Curt But
terfield, club president.
Butterfield said the purpose
is to remind motorists not to
leave keys in the ignition switch
and the vehicle unlocked.
The project was undertaken
nationally by the 20-30 club be
cause almost 55 per cent of all
juvenile crime involves automo
bile theft. Stolen cars aid in a
large percentage of other juve
nile crimes, Butterfield pointed
out, and added that in most
cases of car theft, keys were left
in the car.
Butterfield said law enforce
ment officials are cooperating
with the club's project to urge
motorists to remove car keys
when the car is left unattended.
Stevenson Says Illinois Governor
Trying To Be GOP Hatchet Man

nois Gov. William Stratton of
trying to become the GOP's hat
chet man now thst Vice-President
Richard M. Nixon "is offi
cially on his own."
The charge was a tit for tat
rejoinder to Stratton's free
swinging attack on Stevenson's
record as governor of Illinois.
Stratton succeeded Stevenson
in the Illinois governor's man
sion but had generally refrained
from head-on collision with his
predecessor until he opened up
in New York last night.
He called Stevenson "one of
the weakest" Democratic presi
dential candidates and said that
his Illinois administration was
marked by "neglect . . . open
scandal and grievous disaster."
Stevenson wasted no time in
branding Stratton's attack as
"hysterical" and charging that
he is trying to achieve a nation
al role as a Republican hatchet
man.
"We Democrats have some
curiosity about the composition
of the Republican ticket," he
said. "We know who is going to
carry the flag, but there seems
to be some question as to who
will wield the hatchet.
"I gather that Gov. Stratton
has entered the spring tryouts
for that important post, in case
Mr. Nixon falters now that he is
officially on his own."
Stevenson was . referring to
speculation over whether Nixon
has President Eisenhower's
backing for a second term as
vice-president. The President
said at his Wednesday news con
ference that he has told Nixon
to make up his own mind about
whether he wants to be a can

news conference and in a speech
at the National Republican club.
He listed a . mine disaster,
prison riots, and alleged scan
dals in state purchases and
counterfeited cigarette stamps
as among the faults of Steven
son's 1949-1953 administration.
Stevenson failed to make an
attack on Illinois problems, lead
ing to "the assumption that he
couldn't do it nationally," Strat
ton said.

In Bank Robbery !

rested a second man today in
connection with the S188.000
Port Chester, N.Y., drive-in bank
robbery.
An FBI spokesman identified
the suspect as Angelo P. John,
White Plains, N.Y., a two-horse
racing stable partner of the
prime robbery suspect, Arthur j
Paisner. !
Paisner, who was arraigned :
yesterday, blurted out in federal
court, "I am guilty."
The FBI said John was mere
ly charged with withholding in
formation, not with actually i
taking part in the holdup. He is i
being held in $10,000 bail. j
The robbery took place last i
Friday. About 5110,000 of the
loot was recovered in the trunk
of Paisner's car. The FBI said
he gave another $55,000 to an
accomplice.
