Soldiers Slightly
Injured in Mishap
Portland 4J.R) A nose wheel
of a four-engined C-124 Air
Force Globemaster collapsed as
the plane landed here last night
and some 50 soldiers suffered
burned hands sliding down
escape lines to safety.
The plane carried about 100
airmen of the 460th fighter-in
terceptor group returning from
Georgia where they had been on
a training mission. There were
no serious injuries.
The big plane stopped in the
middle of the two longest run-
ways on the field and incoming
traffic was stacked up over the
city for almost two hours. Twin
engine craft which could use
shorter runways at the Interna
tional airport were the only
planes which could leave until
the C-124 was pulled away from
the runways.
Those aboard were ordered to
leave the ship by "escape lines"
when officers feared the plane
might catch fire. The lines run
from the top of the plane which
is as tall as a two-story build
ing. The soldiers with burned
hands were treated at the base
(-hospital.
Florida Snails To Wage

nibal snails raised in Forida are
on the way to Hawaii to wage
war on giant snails in vegetable
gardens.
. F. C. W. Kramer Jr., 81,
O raised the snails as a sideline
and sold them to the Hawaiian
government for 25 cents apiece.
He airmailed the snail colony
Wednesday.
"These cannibal snails are so
mean that they will not only
eat other snails, but each other
as well," Kramer said. "We had
to pack them in egg cartons and
give each snail a stateroom of his
own for the air voyage over the
Pacific."

Sparkman Serves Notice Demos
To Make Issue of Ike's Health
Washington U.R) Sen. John
J. Sparkman (D-Ala.) served
formal notice Wednesday night
that Democrats would make
President Eisenhower's health a
major campaign issue.
He said Mr. Eisenhower was
working only a 35 to 40 hour
week now compared to the 60
hours he devoted to the affairs
of state before his heart attack.
The people will not reelect "a
part-time president to deal with
full-time problems," he said.
Sparkman, Democratic vice
presidential nominee in 1952,
made his charges in delivering
to the nation the Democrats'
"reply" to Mr. Eisenhower's radio-TV
speech of last week ex
plaining his decision to seek a
second term.
Spoke Over One Network
Sparkman spoke over the
Mutual Broadcasting System, ,
the only network giving the
Democrats equal time to an
swer Mr. Eisenhower. The other
networks argued that Mr. Eisen
hower spoke only as a candidate
for the Republican nomination
and not against the Democrats.
Sparkman said that "if a full
measure of health is ever needed
anywhere, it is needed in the
White House."
He said that reelecting Mr.
Eisenhower as a "part-time pres
ident" would weaken the presi
dency itself. He pointed out
that Mr. Eisenhower already has
said he would hand over "to his
associates functions which lie at
the very core of the presidency,
and which, under the constitu
tion, cannot be delegated to non
elected subordinates of the
president."
Sparkman also said that de
spite White House claims Mr.
Eisenhower has not returned to
"full-time . . .command" since
his heart attack.
Charges Mideast Indecision
He said Mr. Eisenhower's
isolation from the stream of
events" had been reflected in
administration "indecision" on
Middle East policy, the farm and
defense crises, in meeting Rus
sia's new "economic offensive"
and in Secretary of State John
Foster Dulles' "brink of war
misadventure."
The President told the nation
in his radio-TV address that as a
result of his heart attack,- he
would have to curtail some activ
ities but could carry . out "im
portant" duties as well as ever.
At his news conference
Wednesday, he gave this reply
when asked what he would do
if he found out before the Re
publican National Convention
that his health has deteriorated:
, "I have said, unless I left abso
lutely up to the performance of
the duties of the president, the
second that I didn't, I would no
longer be there in the job or I
wouldn't be available for the
job."
Jacksonville Play
Scheduled Friday
Jacksonville "It's Great To
Be Crazy," a three-act comedy
by Donald Peyton, this year's
Jacksonville High school senior
class play, will be presented
Friday, March 9, at 8 p.m., in
the high school gymnasium.
Thayer Tarvin of the Foot
lighters is director, and Miss
Phyllis Stevens, a senior at the
school, is student director.
Tickets will be on sale at the
box office the night of the play
and reserved seats, general ad
mission and children's tickets
will be available.
Infectious Hepatitis
Among Cases Listed
One case each of infectious
hepatitis and infectious monon
ucleosis were reported to the
Jackson County Health depart
ment during the week ending
March 3, according to the week
ly department report on com
municable diseases.
The cases were both reported
from Medford.
Othe- cases in the county in
cluded 22 chicken pox, five
strep throat, four pneumonia,
three pink eye, six trench
mouth, eight measles, two
mumps and 11 influenza.
