No Innocent Victim

years ago because my wife want
ed to marry someone else. Since
then I have found that the nice
girls don't want to have dates
with me. Their parents seem to
feel tat as I made a failure
of my first marriage, I am not
eligible. As my family has lived
in this neighborhood all their
lives, the people I know all
know oui divorce and my
wife's marriage. The girls who
will go out with me are not the
sort I would want to marry. I
feel I as the innocent victim
of this divorce and should not
be penalized in this way."

(A) There is never an "in
nocent victim" in any divorce,
though it is true one partner is
usually more to blame than the
other .GEven if you tried to make
a go of your marriage and did
all you could to make your wife
happy, there must have been
something you did to make her
want to leave you for another
man.
True, all you may have done
was to choose the wrong type
of girl. But few people will think
of that as the cause of your
divorced There is a fairly uni
versal belief that the man is
always to blame, one way or
another, when his wife wants
to leave him.
More Likely To Be Critical
Because the people you know
have known you, your family
and your wife, they are more
likely to be critical' of your di
vorce than strangers would be.
They are apt to take sides with
you onyour wife, depending on
whether they like you or her
Pair Rescued From
Apartment House Fire
Portland CU.R) Two persons
were rescued from a flaming
two-story apartment here yester
day. Policemen and firemen
rescued Mrs. Mary Edelson, 39,
and Holt Cunningham, 63. Mrs.
Edelson was unconscious when
she was found in her flat.
Officers found Cunningham
asleep. They awakened him and
took him outside, and he told
them Mrs. Edelson was in the
flat below. Firemen broke a bed
room3 window and rescued Mrs.
Edelson.
Firemen said the blaze was
caused by a smoker's carelessness.

liott, builder of the famed win
dowed tunnel highway at Mitch
ell point on the Columbia river
highway, died Sunday at Fort
Worth, Tex., according to word
received here.

Roseburg Attorney
Jailed for Contempt
Rosebure (U.R) Rosebure At
torney Spencer W. Yates was
jailed here Monday on a one-day
sentence for contempt of court
imposed by Circuit Judge Carl
E. Wimberley.
It was the first time in the
legal history of Douglas county
that an attorney had been found
in. contempt and sentenced to a
jail term.
The contempt proceeding
stemmed from a personal injury
damage suit in Judge Wimber
ley's court last Wednesday. At
that time the court reprimanded
a. witness for evasive answers.
. Yates, an attorney for the
plaintiff in the civil action, said
"I object to the court s irascible
tone."
Today Judge Wimberley said
"I consider the word 'irascible'
to be insolent, contemptuous
and deliberately premeditated."
He offered to allow Yates to
make a public retraction and
apology but the attorney refused
and was remanded to the sheriff
for imprisonment.
Hope Said Dimming
For Tax Reduction
Washington (U.R) House Re
publican Leader Joseph W. Mar
tin Jr. says "hope is gradually
dimming" for a tax cut this year.
He blamed Democratic addi
tions to President Eisenhower's
budget.
Martin told the United Press
Sunday the 31st anniversary of
his membership in the House
that "at the start of this session
of Congress I was quite hopeful
there could be a tax cut."
"But that hope is gradually
dimming," the Massachusetts Re
publican declared.
He said the Democratic-controlled
House Appropriations
Committee may have set some
kind of a precedent Friday when
it added $154,000,000 to Mr.
Eisenhower's budget requests on
two big money bills.
