from persons who resent my
mention of a poor nervous hered-

also, many
kind and help
ful letters
from persons
who say "You
just go on
talking about
heredity; you

I ought to know, with the family
I have!" I recently received an
interesting letter from an able,
keen woman who, she says, has
some bad days whenshe gets to
"wringing her hands in an agony
of nervousness." At times it is so
bad she can hardly stand it, and
then she has to go out and walk
and walk until she is tired
enough to quiet down. Also she
has terrible headaches.
Where did she get all this. She
says she got it mainly from her
father who once had to go into
a mental hospital. A brother of
my correspondent, also, had sev
eral spell? which required treat
ment in a mental hospital.
Another brother had stomach
ulcers and eventually got to
drinking heavily, and another
brother took to the bottle. A sis
ter is well. The reasCn three out
of four were hit so hard is prob
ably that some mental trouble
came also from the mother's
side. The mother and one of the
mother's sisters spent years in
a mental hospital.
P The writer says, "Mv sister
and I were told years ago that
insanity is never inherited, and
I think this untruth helped us
in that, r a time, it diminished
our fear of mental diteass; To
day we know that mental disease
is definitely inherited and so we
have rejectedo the old tie. W
are now facing fact resolutely;
we are trying to live sanely,
and. we areOtryinj to raise our
Children so sensibly that they
can grow up into gcx8 and sane
citizens.
I pray with this fine woman
and her sister that they mayGsuc
ceed. Even with a bad nervous
heredity, a person does not have
to crack-up. It help tremendous
ly to live sanely and to cling to
one's sanity. It can help greatly
to consult a kind and able psy
chiatrist. Oftentimes the new
sedative drugs help, and often,
as when a person is badly de
pressed, it helps to have a few
electroshock treatments.
Tapeworms o 0
Quite a few persons have a
tapeworm and do not know it.
One cannot blame a physician
for not thinking of this disease
and examining for it, because so
few North Americans harbor
these worms. They are far more
common in certain countries
where beef, pork, and certain
fishes are eaten raw, just smok
ed oiQlmost uncooked.
The two commonest tape
worms live in the bowels of cat
tle and hogs. Little cysts, from
which the adult worms can grow
are scattered throughout the
muscles (meat) of the animal. If
'a man eats such a cyst in which
the parasifte has not been killed
by cooking he is likely soon to
have a tapeworm in his bowel.
A high percentage of dogs and
cats have tapeworms but thejP
are not of the type that grow in
the bowel of man.
The surest way to avoid get
ting a tapeworm is not to eat almost-raw
hamburger or sausage.
The Finns, who like to eat raw
fish, often get in their bowel a
bad type of tapeworm wfiich
causes a severe anemia.
It is hard ft gay what symp
toms are produced by a tape
worm. Probably in most cases
there are no symptoms that can
be recognized. Usually the per
son involved must make the
diagnosis by noting in the toilet

These look usually like white
segments of a noodle. It is easy
to tell what they are when a
dozen or 100 segments are stuck
together. Tiey are especially
likely to be passed after the per
son has taken a laxative, or
when he has diarrhea. Then a
yard or more ofSvorm will come
away, and the diagnosis will be
easy.
As soon as a person finds that
he is passing segments of tape
worm he should go to a physi
cian. Unfortunately, it is not al
ways easy to get rid of theiead
of the worm. One must get this
because, otherwise, the thing
will grow again. There are sev
eral drugs that can be given.
Many years ago, while practic
ing in a tropical country, I found
as the Germans had found long
ago, that the main secret in get
ting rid of a tapeworm is not to
take a purgative before the
medicine is taken to numb the
worm. I remember an engineer
down in Mexico, who had tried
a dozen times to get rid of tape
worm. One day, coming in off
Jhe desert, terribly thirsty, he
drank several quarts of ice-cold
root beer, anddthe worm meekly
came away!
