Republicans Jubilant Over Presidents
Decision To !Se Candidate for Reelection
By UNITED PRESS .
Republicans throughout the
nation today welcomed Presi
dent' Eisenhower's statement
that he would be willing to run
for reelection. -
Some Democrats also cheered
the news that the President's
health was such he would be
able to remain in politics.
Former President Hoover
said: "I am certainly glad that
President Eisenhower is willing
to run for reelection. And I am
sure the majority of the Ameri
can people are grateful for his
declaration." .
Nixon Sees Reelection
Vice-President Richard M.
Nixon: The Republican Nation
al Convention will renominate
Mr. Eisenhower by acclamation
and "he will be overwhelming
ly reelected in November." Mr.
Eisenhower "has prayerfully
weighed a step that represents
so much to the cause of peace
and freedom to all men Only
a man completely consecrated to
the service of his country" could
have made the decision-he did.
Leonard W. Hall, GOP na
tional chairman: The President's
decision "is the best possible
news for ill Americans . . . It
means a continuation - of .the
peace, prosperity,, and progress
of the Eisenhower Republican
administration. For the Repub
lican party this is . the ringing
call for an all-out campaign.
We are going to work for a
Republican victory all down the
line from the White House to
the county courthouse." I
Butler Not So Sure
Paul M. Butler, Democratic
national chairman: "The Ameri
can neoDle will never elect a
President who, at 65, has had a
serious heart attack and who
is unable to be a full time chief
. executive . . . Republican lead
ers have high pressured Mr; Ei
senhower into this decision with
out regard to the possible con
sequences to him, his family 'or
the public . . . The uncertainties
of his future health, are bound
to . . . dominate the campaign
and tend to obliterate discussion
and consideration of .the great
issues . . . Our country heeds a
full time President . . .
Former President Truman was
not available for comment to
day in his downtown offices.
He indicated yesterday, how
ever, that he would have noth
ing to say, regardless of Mr; Ei
senhower's decision.
Alf M. Landon, Republican
presidential nominee of 1936:
"It is evident that the President
reached his decision after long
and conscientious soul searching
as to his ability to finish his
job. The grandeur of his con
tribution to world peace appeals
to him above personal ease." ;
Gov. Goodwin J. Knight of
California, a Republican: "I am
delighted to learn of President
Eisenhower's decision to be a
candidate for reelection." He
said he wouldK proceed to file
an Eisenhower slate of delegates
for the June 5 California pri
mary "in company with Vice
President Richard M. Nixon and
Sen. William F. Knowland."
' Rep. Sam Rayburn (D-Tex.),
speaker of the House of Repre
sentatives: "I thought all the
time .he was a candidate be
cause in my opinion he has been
acting and talking like one."
Sen. Estes Kefauver (D
Tenn.): "I am glad President
Eisenhower feels that his health
will permit him to make a.cam
paign seeking another four
years in the presidency. Having
been responsible for the record
of the past four years, the Pres
ident is the best qualified man
to defend that record . . .'De
spite Mr, Eisenhower's personal
popularity, I am confident we
Democrats will win the presi
dency because our record and
program are most appealing to
the greater mass of voters."
Sees Vigorous Campaign
Adlai Stevenson, former pres
idential nominee said: "As the
main , issue will he the - policies
and record of the Eisenhower
administration, it is fitting that
President Eisenhower be. .the
candidate.
"As the administration's chief
architect and spokesman, he
will have to carry the burden
of what will be a very vigor
ous campaign," Stevenson said.
"Mr. Eisenhower has drawn
the distinction between the
private matter of his personal
health and the public question
of how the office of the Presi
dent shall be conducted. I as
sume he will deal with the as
pect of his decision in his re
port to the people, and set the
terms of the 'debate on this, is
sue." ..'
Sen. Johnson Happy
Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson of
Texas, Senate Democratic lead
er: "I -am happy that the Presi
dent feels his health has recov
ered to a point ? where he - is
ready for the rigors of an ardu
ous campaign.". But he warned
"the campaign will be arduous,
The American people will want
a full discussion of the vital
issues of war and peace before
they decide who will be the
trustee for their destinies for
the next four years."
Douglas McKay, interior sec
retary: The announcement " "as
sures that in the crucial period
of world history which lies
ahead our destiny will continue
to be guided by the outstanding
leader who has demonstrated re
peatedly his unique abilities to
preserve the peace and advance
the welfare of all the people .

Eugene, Salem
Face Transit Curb
By UNITED PRESS :
Citizens of two Oregon cities
have taken steps to sustain night
transit service in their cities as
companies announced plans to
curtail the service due to lack
of patronage.
In Eugene, the city council
has adopted a plan which urges
businessmen ' to help boost . the
daytime transit use of its cus
tomers while ' in Salem a 23
member citizens committee ap
peared before the -city council
asking that service not be dis
continued there. .
. The Eugene plan would ask
businessmen to redeem bus fares
of its customers when purchases
are made in. their stores. The
system would be set up with a
ticket -validation plan. '
. The City Transit Company of
Eugene has agreed to a trial
period for the new proposal in
the hope that a greater daytime
patronage will compensate for
loss the company incurs at night.
r In both cases the transit com
pany proposed the curtailment
of night service due to lack of
patronage and a growing loss on
the lines. 1 .

"Washington (U.R) Presi
dent Eisenhower did not issue
a prepared statement on his sec
ond term announcement. The
following accurately reflects
what he said . but is carried in
the third person , because of
White House rules prohibiting
direct quotation without special
permission.
He has reached a decision.
But he found so many factors
involved that he saw his answer
could not be expressed in simple
terms of yes or no.
He felt that a full explanation
to the American people was nec
essary. He would never ; consent
to go before the . people unless
he was sure- they understood all
the factors and possibilities. He
would not allow his name to go
before' the Republican conven
tion - unless they knew all the
facts so they could be sure they
were not nominating someone
other than they thought.
He could not say flatly that
he would run because he does
not know for certain that the
Republican convention would
want him.
He is asking for time on ra
dio and television networks to
night to go directly to the Am
erican people with the facts.
His answer within these -lim
its which he will explain to
night, will be positive, that , is,
affirmative.
Because he will give full de
tails of his decision tonight he
did not intend to have it as a
subject for further discussion at
this morning's news conference

London (U.R) Foreign Sec

Lloyd's specific goal is Kara

day, but he plans to make half
a dozen stops on the way there
and back to confer with local
leaders. ' : '

Lloyd said just before he
boarded a special plane here that
his only purpose Is to try to pre
serve and extend peace. He said
he has no intention of trying, to
match the Russians' offers of aid
or their propaganda insults. "
No Unpleasant Statements
"I am not going to try to com
pete with the Russian leaders,"
the foreign secretary said. "I am
not going to say anytfting un
pleasant about Russia ...
"The whole purpose of British
foreign policy. is peace .... . no
other country has anything ; to
fear from a British foreign sec
retary going abroad."
One major objective of Lloyd's
trip will be a new effort to settle
the 'eight-year-old feud between
Israel and the Arab states. He
has a compromise plan to offer,
but it does not include any prom
ise of increased arms for Israel.
