at Altus Air Force base have an
unwelcome object to which they
wish they could attach a propel
ler and wave goodbye. .
But the object a 100-foot tall
concrete' tower stands firm on
its foundation. The space occu
pied by the tower is needed for
future construction work.
The main headache faced by
army engineers and base'air in
stallation crews is the fact that
the tower can't be merely
knocked over, because it would
fall on a gymnasium under con
struction. ".- .
No wrecking companies will
undertake to do the job, nor will
insurance companies issue a pol
icy covering damage to sur
rounding structures.

If the test of the basal metabolic
rate shows that their body chem
istry is down more than 20 per
cent, they may be greatly help
ed bv taking some thyroid sub

physician). They must not take
enoueh to nroduce iitteriness
that might injure the heart.
Some people have an abnor
mally dry skin all their days.
They have inherited it from
some ancestor. We physicians
call this trouble ichthyosis or
fish skin. I remember a family
in which several members had
a dry, wrinkled, scaly skin that
looked something like the cast
off skin of a snake. About all
such people can do is, each day,
to rub some oil or cold cream
into their skin, especially after
bathing. The rubbing of oil or
fat into the skin can cut down

There is no question about the
facts that accidents teach people
to be cautious more quickly and
effectively than anything else.
They can, however, build up
fears which prove to be a great
handicap.

to do the same with me. When
he was old enough to get., a
driver's license, he drove' like a
madman. The mere his father
and I talked to him about this,
the faster and more recklessly
he drove. He seemed io want
to show me that he wasn t
afraid, as I am.
Well, as was inevitable, he had
bad accident, broke a leg.
lost several teeth, and had some
pretty bad cuts on his face.
Fortunately he wasn't killed nor
was the girl - who was driving
with him badly hurt. Since then,
he is so afraid of cars that he
uses every possible excuse to
avoid driving. This is a great
handicap io him on dates as no
girl wants to go to a party or
even the movies unless the boy
drives her there.
"The boys make, fun of him
for being a 'chicken' and it is
giving him a bad inferiority
complex. The accident happened
nearly a year ago and he. seems
to be getting worse, rather than
better. Is there any way we
can help him as we feel that this
fear is affecting his schoolwork
and will be a great handicap to
him in any. work he goes into

(A) It is perfectly natural for
your son to have a fear-complex
after his accident. Most people
do develop a fear of driving or
of being driven after an experi
ence of the sort your son had. In
his case, the matter has been
worse because he unquestionably
knows he was at fault and tins
has undermined his confidence
in his ability to drive.
In modern times, it is almost
essential for people to drive un
less they live in large cities
where good public transporta
tion is available. In your son's
case, he will be greatly handi
capped if he allows this fear to
get such a hold on him that he
will never want to drive again.
Why not talk to him about pro
fiting by his mistake, and then
drive with him until he regains
some of his former confidence?
It may take months but it is the
only way he will be able to con
quer his fear.

curious, but the first day in Octo
ber or November when the
weather turns' sharply cold, the
skin-itchiness of older people
starts up. The oil-producing
glands in their skin are not
active enough.
Large Head Full of Fluid
Some babies develop a large
head which is due to the reten
tion of an abnormal amount of
fluid in the spaces inside the
brain. In these children the nor
mal balance between the forma
tion and the removal of the
fluid is disturbed. In some cases
the condition rights itself after
a time so that the child can
go on living, and without too
much injury to his brain. In oth
er cases the head keeps getting
bigger and bigger; more of the
brain is injured and the child's
mentality has to suffer. ,
Some years ago an operation
was designed with the idea of
helping these children. Obvious
ly, all children whose head is
getting too big should be seen
quickly by a good children's
specialist and a good brain sur
geon to see if anything curative
can be done.
Dr. Alvarez regrets he hasn't
the time in which to read and
answer requests for information.
