Sampling of Farmers
Shows Two-Thirds

Management magazine said to
day first returns of its poll of
50,000 western farmers indicates
that nearly two-thirds think Ag
riculture Secretary Ezra T. Ben
son is doing a good job.
The vote was strictly along
party lines, with 65 per cent of
the 4,000 first returns declaring
the. Republican Party this year,
showing 64.5 per cent for Ben
son, against 34 per cent for the

Michigan City's school children
lined up for immunization shots
today to protect them against a
mysterious outbreak of diph
theria. There have been 21 .cases of
the choking disease in ? the last
few weeks in Michigan City
and a surrounding area which
includes 40,000 persons. Thir
teen of the cases were reported
during the week-end and all but
one of those stricken are chil
dren. Modern diphtheria serums
have made the disease a rarity
in modern America and there
were only 28 cases in all of In
diana last year.
None of the diphtheria vic
tims here has died or is in criti
cal condition and most of the
cases are localized to an area on
the west side of Michigan City
and in nearby Coolspring town
ship. ' r .
Former Jazz King
To Enter Monastery

Boyce Brown, once rated the na
tion's hottest man on an alto
sax, gave up the world of jazz
today for a lifetime in a Catho
lic monastery.
The 45-year-old jazzman was
scheduled to take his vows as a
lay brother of the Servite ' Fa
ters, order of the Servants of
St. Mary, at the monastery near
Granville, Wis.
He looked forward with hap
piness to a lifetime of religious
contemplation, menial labor,
and possible missionary work.
He will play his alto sax only
on feast days.
Brown, who has been a novi
tiate in the order for a year and
a day, said the explanation for
his new life is simple.
"It isn't a gloomy life," he
said. "To me, it's more exciting
than musip was."

Favor Soil Bank
The magazine, which is aimed
at the "big" farmer rather than
the small individual, said the
survey showed most western
farmers take a dim view of price
supports, favor soil bank restric
tion and divide on the question
of restricting federal -payments
to farmers "with certain annual
income levels. - '
The continuing compilation of
returns beyond the first 4,000
show no significant changes in
percentage figures, the maga
zine said.
Survey questionnaires were
mailed to 212,437 "commercial"
farms with incomes of $1,200 a
year or better in the seven west
ern states Arizona, California,
Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah
and Washington.
More Questionnaires Due
A magazine spokesman said
another 50,000 questionnaires on
the same subject will be mailed
out this week to give nearly 50
per cent sampling. '
The questionnaire asked "do
you think the secretary of agri
culture 1 is doing a good job?
2 is not doing a good job?" A
random sample of 300 question
naires from among the 4,000,
separated by political party pref
erence, gave this breakdown:
Democrat: Opposed to Benson
87 per cent;. pro-Benson 12
per cent.
Republican: Pro-Benson 89
per cent; opposed to Benson 11
per cent.

Shady Cove Grange social meet

Reuben Cook of the Illinois Val
ley Grange were guests.
Master Cecil Kee conducted a
short business meeting. Most of
the lecture hour was taken up
by officers' practice. Little Ce
cilia Kee entertained with dance
numbers and Group singing was
enjoyed by all the members.

Her death was not disclosed
until Monday. Friends had

recent years, during which she
shunned publicity.

The agency said orders placed
