Douglas Says Choice Better Than Nothing

Douglas, picked by the Harvard
Lampoon as the worst actor of
1955, said today he considered
it better to be named the worst
than not to be named at all.
Douglas, who "won" his acco
lade from Lampoon for perform
ances in "Uiysses" and "The
Indian Fighter," quoted from the
18th century poet, John Wolcot:

Debbie Reynolds, named the

Smiths are forever popping up
the news, but how often do
you hear about
the Jones
boys?
That's "what
kicks up the
tiger An my
new friend,
Barry Jones.
"Dad blame
it," he said,
"the Smith

Harman Nichols ooys are in me
papers all the time. But some of
them are hybrid. Some spell It
'Smith' and some "Smythe" and
ever which way.
"But there is only one way to
spell 'Jones' unless you spell it
backward like 'Senoj.' And that
way, it isn't proper and also
does not make much sense."
Barry would like you all to
know that he is among the "un
counted millions" of Jones boys.
No Foul Balls
"And there isn't a foul ball or
hybrid in the flock," he said.
Barry was here to toot a horn,
for a new picture he is starring
in. Produced by United Artists,
it is called 'Alexander The
Great."

Engine Derailed
Near Oakridge
: Oakridge (U.R) A two
unit diesel locomotive, sweeping
the Southern Pacific's main line
clear of snow, was derailed
about 30 miles east of here yes
terday afternoon, blocking pas
sage of trains through the Cas
cades for nearly eight hours. No
one was injured in the mishap.
The derailment occurred
near Cinder Till at the 4,000
foot level where snow is piled
up along the tracks in 15-foot
drifts. .The engine was one of
several that has been working
around the clock to keep the
tracks open over the Cascade
summit, where a snow slide
only a week ago nearly engulf
ed a freight train and forced
closure of the line.
Railroad officials said the en
gine was equipped with a flang
er for sweeping the tracks clear
of snow. The flanger apparently
struck a snow covered stum))
which in turn uprooted three
sections of track and turned
the locomotive over. A relief
train and crane from Eugene
was rushed, to the scene.
Electric Trains Said
For Boys Over Eight
: Madison, Wis. (U.R) If your
son got an electric train for
Christmas and he's less than
eight years old, he would have
been better off with a wooden
train. - -
That's the opinion of Viola
Hunt, family life specialist at the
University of Wisconsin.
She said that a boy "is not
ready for an electric train until
ho s about eight or nine years
old. Until then, he'll be happier
with a wooden train he can push
around by himself."
Miss Hunt said that toys, like
clothing, should fit the child who
receives them.

said the balding old-timer. It's

ain and everywhere I never
have found the time to settle

when he was coming up as a
boy, a member of the royalty he

hopped up in her box seat and

Get Prison Terms
Klamath Falls (U.R) Two
men received 10-year prison sen
tences yesterday in ' separate
manslaughter cases.
George Dumont, 55-year-old
saw filer, was sentenced to 10
years in the state penitentiary
and a $500 fine. Dumont was
found guilty of killing Jason
Charles, 50, during an argument
overv a proposed deer hunting
expedition last October at Lone
Pine. 7 , . r
Marcellus John Norwest, 26,
also got 10 years and was fined
$500 for the Oct. 21 slaying of
Jackie Howard Jones, 24-year-ol
former divinity school stu
dent. " Norwest was indicted for sec
ond degree murder but later
pleaded guilty to a reduced
charge of manslaughter. Police
said Jones was shot in an argu-
I ment over a case of beer.
