Many persons wonder if any
thing can be done to make their
ir-ir-foid and wet hands warmer

They wonder
why Nature
gave them
such hands.
I have known
some secre
taries who
c o uld hardly
work in an of
fice because

hands they soiled the paper on
which they were writing. Such
hands are found! practically al
ways in the cases of very tense,
nervous persons, and tne trou
ble is due to too great an activity
of the nerves that supply the
blood vessels and sweat glands
in the arms. If only such a per
son could become calm and hap
py and free from terrible ten
sion he' or she could . probably
have a dry and warm hand.
Years ago the doctors at the
Mayo Clinic called in nerve an
atomists from as far away as
England, and with their help
eventually located some "sym
pathetic" nerves up in the neck
which could be cut. With this
operation the hands could be
made warm and dry. 'But the
operation proved to be a diffi
cult one; it did not always work
well, and sometimes the patient
was left with much pain in his
arms. For this reason it has not
been much used. A similar oper
ation which makes the feet
warm is much less tricky and
hence is commonly performed.
In this operation sympathetic
nerves back of the abdomen are
cut and removed.
Drug Doesn't Work
Many drugs have been tried in
an effort to make the hands
warm and dry; and occasionally
I have seen a report in a medical
journal to the effect that a doc
tor has found such a drug. Un
fortunately, when I have tried
the drug on my patients" with
wet hands, it has not worked.
Some of those many persons
who suffer from cold feet also
have a - tense erratic nervous
system. Mrs. Raverat, who is a
graddaughter of " the famous
Charles Darwin, tells in her very
interesting recent book, "Period
Piece" that the sons of Charles
Darwin inherited his tense sen
sitive nervous system and suf
fered much as he did from cold
feet. They all slept with big
woolen socks on.
Some persons with very cold
hands suffer from the Raynaud
syndrome. In this, one or more
fingers may turn perfectly white
and may then hurt and even be
come blistered or ulcerated.

February Road Deaths
Portland U.R) The number
of traffic fatalities in Portland
for February rose to eight yes
terday with the death of 54-year-old
Ora Elmer Boyles.
Boyles was injured in a two-car
crash last Friday on the city's
northwest St. Helens road.
The death of Boyles ran the
Portland toll for February of
this year higher than it .has
been for any single month since
December 1954 when eight per
sons were killed in the Christ
mas traffic of the city.
It was the 13th fatality of the
year for Portland, six more
than for the same period of last
year. Last February there were
no traffic fatalities in the city.
