Federal Help Sought for
Canadian Child Doomed
To Spend His Life In Coma
Hamilton, Ont. (U.R) A Ca-j reached the decision that Mi-
nadian legislator plans to seek
government aid for a mother
whose 10-year-old son is doomed
to live the rest of his life in a
coma.
Art Child, conservative mem
ber of the Ontario Legislature
said last night he will seek gov
ernment aid for Mrs. Myrtle
Oates.
Mrs. Oates learned yesterday
that her son, Michael, who has
been in a coma since an auto
mobile accident Sept. 14, will
never regain consciousness.
Physicians said Michael could
possibly live 60 years.
Father Killed
Michael's father was killed in
the accident. His mother and sis
ter. Donna, 8, were injured.
Nurses who attended Michael
at Hamilton General hospital
said that although he makes no
sound, he frequently cries
silently.
Since the date of his injury,
he has only once made a noise.
"That was two months later when
his mother, who had" all her ribs
broken in the accident, was
wheeled into his hospital room to
see him.
"He looked at her for several
minutes," a nurse said. "Then his
eyes filled with tears. He cried
very hard for about a minute.
Then he groaned quite loudly
and stretched one hand toward
her."
Dr. R. A. Hughes, a neurolo
gist, said a board of doctors re
viewed the case yesterday and

Bone Removed
An operation was performed
the day after the accident to re
move a three-inch piece of bone
which was pressing on his brain.
That permitted him to open his
eyes. Since then, Michael, his
eyes always open, has stared at
the wall. ' ' .
Mrs. Oakes, who still is suf
fering from her injuries, said she
did net know where she would
get the money to pay bills that
have accumulated since the accident.

it in the basket believing it was
a worthless pen.
