GRIM TASK Rescue crews begin the grim task of removing bodies from the wreckage
of this Marine transport plane. The big four-engine plane crashed into mountainside near
Niles, Calif, while making an instrument approach to Oakland Airport in bad weather.
Thirty-eight Marines died in the flaming wreckage.

Actualy, most of the business
of the newspaper reference room
is on the serious said. It is head
ed up by Pauly Berry, chief of
the serials divisions, and James
Sutton, head of newspaper re
ference. Their worries, though,
generally rest on the shoulders
of two able assitants Paul E.
Swigart and George M. Hall.
I visit the reference room
frequently. It's a wonderful
place. You can rent a typewrit
er for a dime a half hour and
it works fine if you know the
"touch system." .
Thousands of Papers
There are 151,600 bound vol
umes of newspapers around the
walls and in the cellar are un
counted thousands of unbound
copies.
. The team of Swigart and Hall
relies. cm ''Gregory's Union List
of Papers" for reference, which
had its beginnings in 1821. It is
a compilation of libraries around
the country concerning files of
newspapers. '
Swigart thought he was in for
a bad time when a man came
in and wanted to know if the
annex had a picture of his moth

homicide. ' ;
A search was made, the right
paper was found and the man

Marine Corps Probes
Crash Victim Mixup
El Toro Marine Air Station,
Calif. (U.R) A Marine corps
court of - inquiry is investi
gating the tragic mixup in which
some Marines not connected
with a" Niles, Calif., plane crash
were identified as its victims.
The court will also probe the
improper disclosure of the
names of some actual victims.
The names of five crew mem
ber victims of last Friday's Ma
rine transport crash were cor
rectly identified in the first list
of victims, but wrong -names
were given for the plane's pas
sengers. The mistake resulted in
the relatives of 33 Marines be-
ine told erroneously that the
service men had perished.
Several hours later a correct
ed list was released. It was made
up of 34 passengers, five actual
crewmen and one Marine listed
as a crewman who was "hitch
ing" a ride.

Curry Given Praise
For Gambling Cleanup
Salem (U.R) Attorney
General Robert Y. Thorton has
praised Curry County District
Attorney Samuel A. Hall for
"cleaning up gambling in Curry
county" and at the same
time said Oregon laws are
"wholly inadequate to deter the
professional gambler."
Thornton said: "It is a matter
of keen regret to me that our
laws provide for a fine only,
upon conviction for operating
gambling establishments, and do
not permit the courts to impose
jail sentences . even in habitual
cases. Our laws are wholly in
adequate to deter the profes
sional gambler, who regards a
fine as merely part of the cost
of doing his very profitable bus
iness." -.
Hall led raids last Friday
night in which several persons
were arrested in Curry county.

Rossen, - who also wrote and
produced the movie in the tra
dition of true one-man movie
makes, shot for seven months in
Spain on a budget of $4,500,000.
He recruited .the Spanish

Return for Rossen
"Alexander the Great" means
quite a homecoming for Rossen.
Tht director, who gained re
nown for such films as the Oscar-winning
"All the King's
Men," left Hollywood in 1952 af
ter being paged by the un-American
Activities committee. He la
ter testified in New York he had

ably settle in the East now be
cause my children are in school
there." Many other top movie
makers have deserted this town
to make films any place in the
world. Joseph Mankiewicz, Josh
Logan and Elai-Kazan reported
ly plan to build their own studio
in New York. John Huston lives
in Ireland.
"I go wherever the film takes
me," Rossen said. "People should
make pictures any place in the
world, wherever the story is best
suited. I am a gypsy now."
