Effort To Bounce
Hlxon From GOP
Ticket Supported
By LYLE C. WILSON , :
United Press Correspondent
Washington U.R) The movement to bounce Vice-President
Richard M. Nixon off the 1956 Republican ticket has won some
powerful support close to President Eisenhower.
The arguments against Nixon include: he is perhaps the most
controversial figure in American national politics. He is too young
43. The vice-presidency will be of unusual importance if Mr.
Eisenhower seeks and gets a second term. Democratic condemna
tion .of his campaign tactics have hurt his position with the public.
Democrats are ready to center their campaign attack on any man
"who stands a heart-beat from the presidency." ; I' ' , ;-' .
The foregoing are basic in the stop-Nixon effort. They ado up
to the belief, or fear, of some influential persons that Nixon would
cost the national ticket votes if he were on it again this year.
There is no evidence so far that Mr. Eisenhower is impressed
by the arguments for dropping Nixon in 1956. On the contrary,
Mr. Eisenhower's public words and acts have been enthusiastically
favorable to the vice-president.
I 1
Mai
' The President fielded Demo
cratic complaints against Nixon's
1954 campaign tactics with a
note of con-
. gratula t i o n s
on his speeches
and campaign
line. That en
dorsement cov
ered Nixon's
discussion . of
Communist in-
infiltration of
g o v e r nment
during the
i vi c. Wilson
Roosevelt and Truman adminis
trations.
' Mr. Eisenhower also is on rec
ord that an individual nominated
for president should refuse the
nomination if he were not satis
fied with the party's choice for
second place. There has been a
boom of late in confidence that
Mr. Eisenhower shortly would
announce his availability for re
nomination. Approves Conduct
That is what fired up the ef
fort to displace Nixon. On the
basis of information generally
available, it will take a tremen
dous effort to supplant - Nixon
with another if the President
runs again. There is the sturdy
evidence that Mr. Eisenhower
likes his young friend and ap
proves of his conduct as . vice
president and as a party cam
paigner. That approval abund
antly embraces whatever Nixon
may have said in the 1954 cam
paign about the Democratic
Party leadership and the Com
munist infiltration of govern
ment. ., V
It is well known here ' that
Mr. Eisenhower does not intend
to go barnstorming this year if
he does accept renomination. He
will not campaign in the usual,
physical sense of the world at
least he says he won't. The cam
paign load will fall chiefly on
the Republican vice-presidential
candidate.
Can Carry Load
. Nixon has shown that he can
carry that kind of load to Mr.
Eisenhower's satisfaction, re
gardless of what others may say
about it. Former Gov. Thomas
E. Dewey, of New York, " is
another rough and ready Repub
. lican campaigner. He proved it,
finally, in the 1950 gubernatorial
campaign; There are others, but
not many. Dewey is not serious
ly discussed for the spot anyway.
All good Republicans are not
good . campaigners, . capable of
the physical and mental strain of
a national campaign in a presi
dential year. The jstop-Nixon
strategists'must come up with a
substitute . who can perform on
the stump. That is their first
problem.- , They are thinking
more, however, of a man who
might suddenly succeed to the
presidency Their second task
will be to persuade Mr. Eisen
how that their man would do a
better job for him than would
Nixon. v
It won't be easy. Mr. Eisen
hower seems committed. But he
has been firmly, committed be
fore this on such largely per
sonal political decisions as this
one would be. And under pres
sure, he has been persuaded to
concede. The stop-Nixon advisers
are betting they can persuade
him again. However that may
be,' look for the drop-Nixon ef
fort to hit hard the moment Mr.
Eisenhower announces that he
will run again. It' could come
any time now, if it is coming at
all. .v.;-..;--, - " .;;
Sacred' Cows Pose
Serious India Problem
New Delhi, India -(U.P.) A
herd of more than 1,000 "sacred"
cows on the loose in the lush
farmlands some 150 miles north
of here today posed a serious
problem for the government.;
Some 17,000 peasants, long
torn between religious accept
ance of the "holy" beasts and
exasperation at their marauding,
have threatened a "no rent"
strike unless the government
finds some way to shoo off the
sacred menace. .,
For several years, the wild
cows have . been staging night
raids on blooming fields, munch
ing unmolested on choice tidbits
of green wheat shoots. To keep
the hungry, bad-tempered beasts
from trampling down croplands,
gorging themselves , on . greens
and then bedding down for naps,
peasants have been . forced to
stand guard 24 hours a day.
