ern Oregon Conference basket
ball championship was squashed
Friday night as the Klamath
Falls Pelicans improved their
own title chances by humbling
the Black Tornado 65 to 57,
Klamath outgunned and ,out-
steadied the Tornado m the
closing portions of the scramble
here to inflict on the loop lead
ing Medfordites their first de
feat in nine games of the cur
rent conference season. The loss
also ended at 20 games the
Tornado's two -year winning
string in the circuit. Medford
swept unbeaten through the
campaign last year.
With its sixth triumph in the
league, the well-balanced, calm
working Pelican - aggregation,
now in second place, whacked
the Tornado lead to two games.
While Klamath was quieting the
Wind at Medford, Grants Pass
kept alive, its hopes for a state
tourney berth by winning 48 to.
38 , at Ashland. The Cavemen
stayed in the running for a tie
for. second in the loop and dis
trict. . -

Friday's ruckus on the Hed
rick court here was hard fought
all the way. Not more than six
counters separated the clubs for
three quarters. Then the " first
five minutes of the final canto
settled the issue. In that space
of time the Pelicans piled up
11 points while Medford collect
ed a single free shot by Bob
Tisdel. That gave the Pelicans
command 59 to 51 and they held
on in a rough finish,' limiting
the Tornado to one field goal
and a total, of seven points in
the stanza. '
Lead switched hands four
times and the game was dead
locked six times during the even
ing. Klamath Falls was on top
16 to 15 at the quarter and
Medford 36 to 30 at halftime
arid 50 to 48 at the third quart
er intermission.
Shooting Cools
Medford played good ball
most of the way had the upper
hand under the backboards into
the third quarter and fired well
from the field during the first
half. But ; work of tall Cliff
Sutherland and Moore under the
boards, the tough defense of the
Pels which held Medford to few
shots, inability of the Tornad
oes to connect when they did
get the opportunity and ; the
larger number of fouls whistled
against the Tornado in the fourth
quarter contributed to turn the
tide for" Klamath Falls.
The Pels got driving play out
of Donn Taucher, , good floor
work and ball handling from
Taucher, Orin Perkins, Butch
Kimpton and Jerry Burke and
timley and consistently accurate
shooting from most of their
hands to keep in the thick of the
fight before they; pushed ahead
to stay.
- Klamath started strong con
trolling the ' action in the first
three minutes of play. Then Neil
Plumley, Medford's tallest man,
entered the fracas, - offsetting
Pel height advantage and the
balance under the boards swung
to the home team.

Medford got its first lead of
the nighj; at 8 to 7 when a re
bound bucket bv Plumley f ol
lowed a fast break shot by Tis
del. The Tornado then extended
to 13 to 8 but Burke, Moore and
Earle Tichenor tallied on feed
in shots and Moore on a jump,
while Tisdel got a long push for
Medford, to give KF its 16 to
15 quarter standing.

each were recorded in the sec
ond quarter before Dick Mc
Laughlin got a pair of gifters
to giye Medford a ,26 to 25
edge. Medford remained in front
from then until late in the third
quarter. Lloyd Cearley's long
pusher and Plumley's rebound
er made the score 30 to 25:
Sutherland hooked a shot but
Plumley put in two free shots
for 32-to 27.
: As the seconds in the half ran
out Plumley connected in close
and Copple from the side of the
key, Moore from the free line
and Sutherland from the side
for 36 to 30.

Coach Bill Hammer's strong
Oregon wrestling team, gunning
for its best season since the start
of wrestling at the Duck athletic
plant three years ago.
As a . team, Oregon had Na

ing an altercation with Perkins
and Copple was benched for his
fifth foul.
Medford was without the ser
vices of Tisdel for almost half
the game. The ballhawking
guard and leading v Tornado
scorer was charged with his
fourth personal infraction after
1V4 minutes of the second per
iod. He left the action and didn't
return until the fourth quarter.
While he was in- the fray, the
Pels, remembering his 27 points
against them in a first round
game, pressed him but Tisdel
still rang up. five field shots.
: Moore was high point man of
the night, Cearley got 15 points
and Taucher and Plumley each

getting 11 and McLaughlin sev
en. Perkins and Moore got seven

Klamath had the best of it
from the field 23 to 22 and from

ing average for the game but
put through only eight shots in
28 attempts for .285 in the sec
ond half. Only eight shots were
tried with one , made in the
fourth panel. Medford hit 14 for

decked the Burns boy three
times. Sams was on his face and
the count tolled eight when the
gong sounded ending the fifth

good fight of '- it .but Puscas was
never in trouble.
A mix-up in judges score cards
resulted in . a draw for Lewis
with Lloyd Louie. Draws general
ly are not given in AAU boxing.
Ringside opinion was that Lewis
had the last two- rounds. He came
strong in') the concluder. Louie
won a state toga in 1954 and
Lewis took the Oregon AAU fly
weight mantle in 1955. .

After fighting to 11-point
leads, the Tornado juniors saw
their margin dwindle away and
they had to go into extra time
to subdue the Pelicans.
The Medfordites had a A5 to
34 command after three quarters
and then turned erratic and
scoreless as Klamath came back
to go on top 47 to 45. Ron
Croxford put the Pels in front.
50-All Score
Richard Puhl knotted up the
count but Danny Shaw's gifter
made it 48 to 47 for KF. Puhl
came through again for a 49 to
48 Medford edge but Croxford
spoiled it and KF led 50 to 49
with slightly more than a min
ute to play-. Gary Riley then got
a free heave for Medford and
50-all was the score at the end
of the regular playing time.
In the overtime. Bilbee ;Lane
scored for Medford off the tip
off but Croxford retaliated with
a tip in bucket. . Then : Johnny

ship of 10 Class A high schools
for several years, will split into
separate A-l and A-2 organiza
tions effective after the spring
meeting on May 12.
That action was taken : yest
erday at a conference meeting
at the Medford hotel.
Medford, Klamath Tails,
uranxs ass ana . Ashland are
the longtime members- of the
organization. Crater was next
to be included and other mem
bers in recent seasons have been
Eagle Point, Phoenix, Illinois
Valley, Henley and Brookings
The smaller schools,' however
have had their own league ac
tivity and have vied in play-offs
with the larger " schools when
necessary. A-l and A-2" division-
ing through the state for all the
major sports now makes ,the big
organization unnecessary. And
the groups have different prob
lems.
Crater Joins Big Group
At the " separation Crater,
which becomes an A-l school,
next fall, will go into the big
school organization with Ash
land, Medford, Grants Pass and
Klamath Falls.
At the Saturday meeting the
district wrestling tourney was
set for next Friday and Satur
day at Southern Oregon college
and Jim Bocchi, Klamath Falls,
was named a state A-l basket
ball tournament official from
this district. Coaches " got to
gether to work out baseball
and track schedules . for -: "this
spring, football slates for next'
fall and the A-l basketball
schedule for 1957.
Conference members voted to
use the same method this year
as in: the past -in determining
school sportsmanship ;''" ratings
and this year's football and
basketball admission ' ' prices
were extended for the 1956-57
school year. ''". -.
Seven schools were represent
ed Saturday. Absent were Eagle
Point, Henley and Brookings.

director, of the physical educa
tion department and member of
the athletic staff at University
of Portland for the past six sea

Tichy said he had received a
number of offers from other
schools and felt compelled to
accept. He has not decided which :
offer he would take. ; ,
Tichy was coach at Wapato,
Wash., high school before com
ing to Portland. He coached
freshman basketball and tennis
at the Portland school.
