. In recent article, Dr. F. L.
Lieboit, of New York, showed
how many children with defects
in their 'feet can be helped by
building wedges of leather into
the soles of their shoes. These
wedges vary in width from 18
to 816 of an inch. Some children
tend to walk in the inner side
of the foot while others walk
on the outer side.
Usually children should have
oxfords of the blucher type with
the laces across a tongue. The
soles should be thick and Dr.
Lieboit thinks they should be
inflexible. He does not believe
in soft-sole shoes. He recom
mends that the shoes be . one
thumb breadth longer and one
little-finger-breadth wider than
the child's foot.
An inner heel wedge is used
for so-called pronated feet in
which the child walks on the
inner side of the foot. Other
common deformities - and their
mode of correction were described.-Dr.
Lieboit emphasized
that there can be no one ortho
pedic shoe because there are so
many types of "disability.

described persons who became a
bit slowed-up both mentally and
physically. They often develop
a poker face with practically no
expression in it, and sometimes
they get a shaking palsy or what
we doctors call pill-rolling move
ments of the thumb and first
fingers of a hand. As the person
stands, he holds this hand close
to his body in front. As he walks
along the street this hand does
not swing as a normal person's
hand does. The man tends to
stand bent forward a little, and
often his steps are rather short
and uncertain. He may shove his
feet along, and he may walk as
if someone had given him a push
and made him 'run for a few
steps so as to regain his balance

Often these persons have
trouble moving their arms and
legs;! they say they feel as if
their muscles were full of glue.
Because of this stiffeness and
the tremor they are extremely
uncomfortable. Usually their
mind remains perfectly clear. A
few manage for" some while to
keep at work. Many stay about
as they are for years; only a few
become crippeld.
The disease appears to be due
to an injury to certain centers
in the brain. In the cases of
young persons this- injury is due
probably to an attack of enceph
alitis or so-called sleeping-sickness
or brain fever. In the cases
of older persons, the trouble is

Usually physicians treat these
patients with drugs related to
belladonna. There are a number
on the market. Sometimes one
of them will relieve some of the
stiffness and some of the tremor,
but in many cases it does Hot
give much help. Kecently, brain
surgeons have, been searching
for an operation which will help
some of these people. Unfortun
ately, the only persons that have
been helped so far are the young
er persons who had an attack of
brain fever. The many elderly
persons who had a little stroke
and were left somewhat crippled
mentally as well as physically,
are not good subjects for opera-
