    Segregation Leaders
Plan To Fight Return
Of Autherine Lucy
Tuscaloosa, Ala. U.P.) Segre
gation leaders today planned or
ganized opposition today to the
return to classes of Autherire
Lucy, the University of Ala
bama's first Negro student.
Word was spread inviting all
"interested persons" to a mass
meeting tonight to form a local
White Citizens Council, an or
ganization which has already
spread over much of the South.
Saek Lawful Means
The councils, claiming mem
bership of top white leadership
in communities already having
chapters, have the announced
goal of seeking to preserve all
forms of racial segregation by
lawful means.
Attorney Hugh Locke told a
Birmingham, Ala., council at its
meeting Thursday night that
Miss Lucy "is not in Alabama
to get an education that is real
ridiculous. She is a tool of
people who want to blacken the
white race of the South."
Miss Lucy was excluded from
class after rioting broke out dur
ing her three days on the
campus. A federal court hear
ing set for Feb. 29 is expected
to determine whether , she will
return.
Student Transfers
The 26-year-old woman was
disclosed Thursday night to have
transferred last Tuesday to the
bi-racial Talladega College at
Talladega, Ala., 110 miles east
of here to "rest" and keep up
With her classwork as an unof
ficial student.
Arthur D. Gray, president of
the integrated liberal arts col
lege said she did not enroll and
planned to remain only about 10
days.
The college, never exclusive
ly white, has only - six white
students among its predominant
ly Negro student body at present.
Gray said white students first
enrolled there 50 years ago.
