According to a recent splendid
article by Dr. 'Normal W. Clein,
of Ppattle (Modern Medicine),

ment can do
much for the
allergic infant
or child. Often
the first thing
needed is some
home detective
work. The
mother can
learn much by

the child just before a spell of
sniffles or colic, diarrhea, vomit
ing, or eczema where he went,
what he ate, what pet animal he
played with, or. what dust he
got into. . . v
In the case of an infant on a
cow's milk formula the first
thing is to change to goat's milk,
soy bean milk, meat milk, or
some other proprietary milk-like
preparation. The infant can be
allergic to the fish oil or other
vitamins he is getting. As Dr.
Clain wisely says, citrus fruit
juices are often very rough on
infants, and "should be avoided
the first year." Dr. Clein objects,
also, to giving mixed cereals to
allergic children. The safest
single cereal is rice. It rarely
causes trouble. Eggs are likely
to cause trouble.
Watch Allergic Child
The . allergic child; should be
kept away from animals, birds,
furs, Kapok and feathers in "pil
lows. Desensitization to pollens,
molds, fungi, and house dust
can "often help. An injection of
influenza vaccine' in October
may help the child to get through
the winter without a bad cold.
Clein doubts if "cold shots" do
anything to help: The theory be
hind them is not logical. '
As Dr. Clein says, today it is
fashionable to blame allergies
on psychic factors, but he has his
doubts. Strang emotion can ag
gravate an allergic manifesta
tion, but Clein does not believe
it evet causes allergy. Certain
ly, one cannot alk a person out
of an allergic reaction; it is not
in his head," as so many per
sons fully believe. To prove this
all one has to do is to introduce
surreptitiously into the meal
given to a highly allergic person
some of the food to which he is
sensitive. He maythen retch
and purge half the night.
I remember a physician friend
of mine, highly allergic to oys
ters, ...who one evening at the
home of a friend, ate a few mouth-
fuls of wild duck. In a few min
utes he was lying on the floor
unconscious and unable to
breathe. Fortunately, 'his host
was a physician who knew how
to save his life with an injection
of epinephrin. My friend had

My own feeling is strong (and
some pediatricians agree) that
all mothers who come of an
allergic family ought to make a
big effort to nurse their infants
as long as possible. This prac
tice would avoid a tremendous
amount of allergic. illness in in
fants, children and even adults.

ache for husbands who
didn't marry good cooks.

Stolen Wheat Said
To Be Poisonous
Portland (U.R) Authorities
warned Saturday that four' tons
of wheat stolen from a loading
platform is poisonous and not
fit for consumption by humans
or animals. -
The wheat was stolen Thurs
day night from a north Portland
loading platform. It had been
treated with a benzene deriva
tive for use as a seed. The stolen
wheat had been- fumigated too
heavily and left on the platform.
Thomas M. Rice, inspector for
the Food and Drug Administra
tion said it was not certain just
how- poisonous the wheat was.
; The poisoned wheat has a pink
tinge because of coloring added
so it could be distinguished from
untreated wheat. -

when he was treated at a hos
pital for cuts on his arms, legs
and toes. '
Kempa said he was dreaming
that a large truck was about to
run him down on a street. There
was no time to dodge, so Kempa
said he dived under the ' truck
between the wheels.
