ie irvin Captured; Vows Bnnocesice of Chinese Execution ilurders
San Francisco (U.R) Cap
tured Leslie Irvin vowed today
he was innocent of the six Chi
nese execution murders with
which he is charged but said he
was resigned to face execution
in Indiana where he escaped
from prison 21 days ago.
The 31-year-old boyish-looking
killer surrendered quietly to po
lice Thursday in a San Fran
cisco pawn shop. He said he
hitchhiked across nine states,
was given rides by "at least 100"
motorists, and was stopped
"about five times" by state
troopers since his escape.
Irvin broke out of the suppos
edly escape-p roof Princeton,
Ind., jail using cardboard keys
he made from the covers of
paper bound novels.
He escaped while awaiting
transfer to the state prison to
be electrocuted for the murder
of Evansville gas station attend
ant W. Wesley Kerr the first of
six persons slain on his two
state homicidal spree.
Questioned by Police
Irvin admitted his identity
Thursday after several hours of
questioning by police.
"Don't you know who I am,"
he said.
"I'm Irvin. I'm wanted for six
muEders in Indiana. I've been
convicted of one of them and
I'm not guilty of any of them."
He said he passed through
Illinois, Missouri, Iowa,' Nebras
ka, Colorado, doubled back to
Wyoming, then crossed Utah,
Nevada and finally to California
while the nation searched for
him.
: Asked if he expected to be
caught, Irving replied, "I hoped
I wouldn't naturally. It's just
like I told my lawyers. I wrote
and told them the day I escaped
that I would come back when
they would give me a new trial."
Suspicious Pawnshop Ownei
Irvin was arrested by Chief
of Inspectors James English and
three other officers who were
called by a pawnshop owner
who became suspicious when
Irvin tried to hock two rings
stolen in a Los Angeles burglary.
He at first gave police the
name of Victor Davis of Los An
geles. He admitted his true iden
tity after police determined that
the real Victor Davis had been
robbed in southern California by
a hitchhiker who stole his iden
tification papers.
William M. Whelan, head of
the local office , of the Federal
Bureau of Investigation, said Ir
vin would be returned to Indiana
on a federal warrant charging
unlawful flight. Such a warrant
makes extradition . formalities
unnecessary.
Whelan said Irwin probably
would be arraigned on the flight
charge , in federal .court here to
day and would be held to await
the arrival of Indiana authorities.
Quebec Prospector Hanged for Slaying American Hunter, 19
Montreal (U.R) Wilbert
Coffin, a 44-year-old prospector,
walked silently to a gallows at
Bordeaux jail early today and
was hanged for slaying a young
American hunter in the Quebec
bush in 1953. .
Coffin protested his innocence
until two hours before the trap
was sprung at 12:19 a.m. (EST).
He refused to say a word in his
last two hours and left no notes.
He was pronounced dead at
12:33 a.m. by the jail physician,
Dr. Marius Denis.
The blond, wiry prospector,
veteran bushman and jack-of-all-trades
was executed for murder
ing 17-year-old Richard Lindsey
of Hollidaysburg, .Pa., whose
mutilated body was found in the
wilds of the Gaspe Peninsula
where he was on a bear-hunting
trip. The bodies, of young Lind
sey's father, Eugene, 47, and
friend Fred Claar, 19, of East
Freedom, Pa., were found near
by. Police charged that he killed
them, too. But he was tried and
convicted on the single count of
shooting young Lindsey to death
with a high-powered rifle that
has never been found. Police
said he slew them for their hunt
ing equipment and about $600
they were carrying.
Reporters were not allowed to
see the execution which was at
tended by a dozen witnesses in
cluding jail officials and six doc
tors who formed a jury panel
for a coroner's inquest. Some de
tails of the execution in the star
shaped jail on Montreal's north
western outskirts were relayed
by Sheriff Paul Hurteau.
"He said not one word, but
walked very bravely to his
death," Hurteau told newsmen
by telephone as they waited for
word at a police headquarters
press room in downtown Mon
treal. Hurteau said Coffin made no
last requests, did not pray aloud
at an 18-minute Protestant serv
ice conducted in his cell by Pri
son Chaplain S. L. Pollard at
midnight.
