Three Frays
McLoughlin junior high ninth
grade basketball team trimmed
the Crater high freshmen 52 to
42 yesterday while the Bulldog
eighth graders were nicking the
Ashland eighth 26 to 19 and the
seventh grade quint was bounc
ing its Lithian counterpart.
The McLoughlin seventh won
by a lopsided count but the ex-
act score was not available to
day because the record book
could not be located
Ninth graders had 14 to 6, 22
to 12 and 35 to 26 leads on
Crater. The Comets chopped the
Bulldog margin to seven points
in the third quarter but the Med
ford club got rolling again and
built up a 15-point gap in the
fourth.
Bob Plankenhorn scored 16
points and Fred Funston 12 for
McLoughlin and Fowler 12 and
White 11 for Crater.
The Bulldog eighth had trouble
making the ball drop through
the hoop. They had an 8 to 5
lead after a quarter but the score
was tied at 12-all at halftime
Third quarter count favored Me
Loughlin 16 to 14. Lynn Knight
got 17 points for the Bulldogs
and was .strong under the back
boards. Gray had 12 tallies for
Ashland.

New York U.R) Sleek Isaac
Logart, the second "Cat-Man"
from Camaguey, Cuba, meets
stocky bulldogged Ramon Fuen
tes of Los Angeles tonight in a
welterweight contenders' TV
radio fight at Madison Square
garden.
Young Logart is favored at
17-5 because of his catlike speed
and spitfire flurries of blows
assets that once made Kid Gavi
lan of Camaguey the world wel
terweight champion.
Stalking that same 147-pound
crown, Logart proved the sur
prise welterweight of 1955 as he
battled from obscurity to his
current fifth place among con
tenders. He won seven of eight
fights with good opponents last
year and reversed the lone loss.
Fuentes is the number three
contender, but he is the under
dog because, at 30, he is eight
years older than Camaguey Ike
and is believed by many betting
men to lack Ike's speed, skill
and punch. However, Ramon of
the crumpled nose and bulging
muscles is physically stronger
than Logart and very rugged,
although he cuts easily. And he
is very aggressive. ,
Five Preliminary Bouts

Portland A total of 24 rounds

Promoter .Tommy Moyer said
he expected to have the card
including an eight-round semi-

the end of this week. He already

Weems and Roque Maravilla, an
other Idahoan, in ' the first of
the four-rounders. Lincoln and

Tornado Aims To Sew
Up Tournament Spot;
Ashland Here Tonight
Successful defense of the
Southern - Oregon Conference
championship and the No. 1
berth from District 6 in the Ore
gon A-l high school basketball
tourney are major objectives of
the Medford high school basket
ball team but the Black Tornado
will be out to reach another
important goal this week end
just plain assurance of a spot
m the state hassle at Eugene
in March.
Medford entertains Ashland
at Hedrick junior high gym
nasium tonight and goes to Ash
land on Saturday while, in an
other conference s series, the
Grants Pass Cavemen play both
nights at Klamath Falls. "
The Tornado can be certain
of one of the district's two tour
ney berths by sweeping its Griz
zly games. A split with Ashland
will assure at least a tie in the
chase for one of the two A-l
meet positions.
Ashland Improved
Action since the early Janu
ary scuffle between the Tornado
and Grizzlies, however, indicates
that. Medford will meet an im
proved and stronger Ashland
aggregation. And the Lithians
will be making a last ditch effort
in the struggle for league
laurels.
Ashland has the potential of
a titular club but, while giving
its rivals trouble, lost five of its
first six loop games. Unless the
Grizzlies can win both . games
from Medford this week, they'll
be out of the running for the
championship and virtually out
of the race for a tourney place.
Medford, nevertheless, is the
favorite, with its 6-0 record to
zoom on to the conference title.
The Black Tornado has surprised
a lot of observers with its driv
ing, scrapping, poised play and
is expected to continue the fight
and hustle which has gained for
it one of the top ratings in state
wide polls.
Plumley Limping
This week end the Tornado
will be forced to function with
out its top rebound man and
with a couple of other men not
up to par physically. Coach
Frank Roelandt said that Neil
Plumley, tallest of the Torna
does, may be in suit tonight
although he's not likely to see
duty. Plumley sprained his ankle
early in the Roseburg fuss last
Saturday and sat out the rest
of the game.
The Tornado without Plumley
still has men capable of making
a great scrap under the boards
in John Foust, Dick McLaugh
lin and Dick Copple. .
Copple is getting over his ill
ness and should be all right to
play although he could tire
easily. Larry Perkins, top re
serve, has been hampered by
a bum ankle but will be able
to play Roelandt reported.
Probable starting five for Med
ford is Copple, McLaughlin,
Foust, Lloyd Cearley and Bob
Tisdel with Ed Tieinking pos
sibly seeing considerable service.
Ashland May Run ,
Of the Ashland crew, Stuart
Baker, one of the taller boys,
has been ill and could see only
limited service. Gene Parent
and Phil Sword are almost cer
tain starters with the other
three to be picked from among
Baker, Harry Johnson, Lance.
Locke and Dave Woods! Jack
Eberhart likely ,wiil see a lot
of duty.
-. Ashland hopes may lie in be
ing able to outrun the Tornado.
And, if the Grizzlies follow the
strategy which has been hinted,
fans may see a fast moving pair
of games. The Grizzlies can give
Medford plenty of trouble if
they can get all their big guns
firing atronce. ' "
During the half time of the
Saturday night game there will
be a special coronation cere
mony of the Ashland high sports
quet;n and her princesses with
the flag girls and the AHS band
putting on a special show. The
new bleachers upstairs will in
sure plenty of good general ad
mission seats for all of the fans.
Warriors Snap
St. Louis String
By UNITED PRESS
i The Philadelphia Warriors
snapped the St. Louis Hawks'
nine game winning streak, but
Paul Arizin of . the Warriors
failed to wrest the scoring lead
from Bob Pettit of the Hawks.
That was the story at Phila
delphia Thursday night as the
Warriors caught fire in the last
eight minutes to beat the Hawks,
108-97. The victory enabled the
Warriors to retain a 3V2 game
lead in the Eastern Division of
the National Basketball Assn., as
second-place Boston nipped Syra
cuse, 98-97, on Bob Cousy's last
second basket.
Arizin fired 34 points through
the hoop to take scoring honors,
but Pettit notched 27 for St.
Louis to hold a slightly-reduced
lead in their red-hot scoring
duel. Pettit now has 1,211 points,
Arizin J.,202. '

enough- to put him in good
standing. ,
