Killed in Portland
Portland (U.R) A 57-year-old
merchant seaman was killed
last night when he was struck
by a car while crossing a Port
land street.
Police identified the victim
as Dahlem Cuppernull, Portland.
Virgil E. Romine, 32,. Port
land, driver of the car which
struck Cuppernull, said he did
not see him crossing the street.
Police said it was foggy, the in
tersection was badly lighted and
the seaman was wearing dark
colored clothes.

Means of Shortening
Oregon Ballot Eyed
Salem (U.R) Means of
shortening the Oregon ballot
were studied yesterday by the
Legislative Interim committee
on Elections headed by Sen.
Pat Lonergan of Portland.
The opinion was expressed by
some members that one method
of shortening the ballot would
be to put . several offices now
elective under appointive power.
Mentioned were the offices of
county engineers and assessors.
Others thought the offices
should remain as they are. The
matter will be further studied.
Also up for further study is a
proposal to give the voters their
choice of a complete slate in
a presidential preference pri
mary. . John C. Fremont led three
early western exploring expedi
tions, two of which extended to
California.

Buildup of Portland
Sewers Being Planned
Portland (U.R) Plans for
a $6,000,000 improvement and
rehabilitation program to build
up Portland sewer facilities
were announced yesterday by
city commissioner. William A.
Bowes.
Bowes told the legislative in
terim comrnittee on local gov
ernment meeting here that the
plan would be financed either
by direct levy or a bond issue.
The bond issue would be sub
mitted to voters on the May pri
mary ballot.
The commissioner said some
old lines "built 60 or 70 years
ago needed to be modernized.
