the Upper Applegate Grange
Friday at 8 pjn. He will discuss
the role of the civil defense
agency in possible disasters in
Jackson county."
The meeting will be held in
the gymnasium of the Ruch
school, which has been used for
Grange meetings since the reg
ular hall burned 'down several
months ago.
General Hicks' talk will be
before the regular Grange meet
ing and any non-Grange mem

I can usually tell in a minute
whether a person has or has not
a true sinusitis by asking him
to let me see his handkerchif.
If he pulls out a clean handker
chief I doubt very much if he
has any sinusitis, but if, from
several pockets, he brings forth
a number of very dirty hand
kerchiefs full of yellow pus, I
am sure that he has some bad
sinuses.
Usually it is very hard to
cure persons with a severe
chornic sinusities. Years ago
nose and throat specialists used
to operate again and again, tak
ing out all of the infected ma
terial they could find in the
several sinuses, but soon they
quit this because' usually their
patients wound up less happy
than they were to begin with.
What resulted was a big cavern
which felt bad and sometimes
smelled bad. '
The frontal sinuses are under
the lower part of the forehead
just above the eyes. Back of
the nose and under the orbits
are the ethnoid and sphenoid
sinuses. Occasionally, and espec
ially in the cases of children, an
acute sinusitis will flare up and
require a drainage operation.
Under the cheek-bones are the
antrums, two cavities that some
times contain pus. When the in
fection is chronic the nose man
will make little "windows" into
the nose and with this drain
age the disease usually clears
up.
The Spleen And Its Functions ,
When I was a medical student
one of the classic stories was
that of the professor who asked
a lad, "What are the functions
of the spleen?" The student an
swered, "I am sorry, Sir; I knew
that yesterday, but now I can
not remember what they are!
Sadly the professor said, "Just
think,' here is the one man in
all the world who could have
told ui 'the functions of the
spleen, and he has gone and
forgotten them."
Actually, today, we know that
spleen is like a large lymph
node, much like one of the
glands in the neck. It has been
called, the graveyard for the ag
ing blood cells that are con
stantly, by the billion, being
withdrawn from the circulation.
Sometimes the spleen seems to
be too active in withdrawing
red cells, and then the person
can get so anemic that he has
to have his spleen removed.'
The spleen enlarges often
with certain diseases of the liver
or of the veins that run.- to the
liver and the spleen; The spleen
enlarges, enormously in cases of
leukemia. It enlarges because
it gets filled with countless bil
lions of the abnormal white
blood cells that go with most
types of leukemia.
Many persons ask me what
will happen to them if their
spleen is removed. If they need
ed a splenectomy to cure a
certain type of disease of the
blood, they should get weE and
feel very happy. They are not
likely to miss their spleen be
cause, like the appendix, it is
an organ that we can get along
comfortably without. After it is
removed we do not have to go
on any diet or take any drug.
Occasionally, a normal spleen
has to be removed after an
automobile or football accident
which caused the organ to be
almost torn in two. Many per
sons may be comforted to know
that the spleen is a non-complaining
organ. It has so few
nerves that, as far as I remem
ber, disease in it is not felt as
pain or soreness or even an
ache.
Pendleton Escapees
Arrested in Nevada
Pioche, Nev. U.R) Sheriff
Arshal Lee disclosed yesterday
that two escapees from the Pen
dleton, Ore., city jail were being
held for investigation following
their arrest on the Nevada Des
ert Saturday after a 40-mile
chase.
Lee identified the escapees as
Robert (Blackie) Palmer, 26,
Walla Walla, Wash., and Bruce
Carver, 25, Omak, Wash. He said
the pair escaped from the jail
Friday where they were being
held on a burglary charge.
He said Palmer claimed to
have killed a woman between
Gila Bend and Tucson, Ariz.,
about a month ago but added the
sheriff's office had not been able
to confirm this.
The men were arrested after
they fled from police in Caliente
who attempted to question them

greater Portland and its environs
would require a $50,000sewage
disposal system by the . year
2005.
- Commissioner M. James Glea-
son said the area of Multnomah,
Clackamas and Washington
counties would require a sew
age disposal project to include
the drainage areas of Fanno,
Beaverton, Kellogg and Johnson
creeks. . .
He said legislative action was
needed to give counties more
home rule and more flexible
power to undertake r financing
and construction.

legislature to act," he said.
