Thornton Urges
GOP To Unite in
Counlry's Baffle
Klamath Falls (U.R) Dan
Thornton, former governor of
. Colorado and currently an ad-
, ministratvie assistant to presi
dent Eisenhower, last night
called on Republicans ' to unite
In what he termed the country'
battle, "The battle between so
cialism and Americanism."
Thornton, speaking at the
Klamath county Lincoln day
dinner last night said, "The com
ing campaign will not be be
between Democrats and Repub
licans but rather between So
cialism .and Americanism."
Brain Washing
He added that Americans have
undergone a brain washing to
convince them that government
should be the master. "The
greatest blow to socialism is the
success of the Eisenhower ad
ministration," he said.
More than 100 Republicans
from Klamath county were on
hand for the fund raising din
- ner and to hear Thornton's re-
vmark's in Klamath Falls last
"'night.
The Republican dignitary also
stated that one of the greatest
blows to Socialism was the Ei
senhow administration's proof
that America can be strong and
business can flourish without
war and government controls.
Thornton has four other
speaking engagements in the
state today, and tomorrow as he
tours the west addressing Re
publican rallies.

Washington -4U.R) The
only sure way for married
couples to tell whether to file
a joint return or separate in
come tax return is to figure the
tax both ways.
Generally, . married couples
save money by filing a joint
return. This may be done on
either Form 1040A or 1040, de
pending on whether your com
bined gross income was less, or
more, than $5,000.
Also, the law allows you to
file each year to your own ad
vantage. In other words, you
aren't bound to file jointly this
year just because you did so
last year.
Before going further it might
be well to point out that "there
are certain situations in which
joint filings are forbidden. These
occur in relatively few cases,
but should be remembered. They
are: If you are legally separated
on or before Dec. 31, 1955: if
you are married, to a foreign
citizen who does not live in this
country; or if you and your wife
report your income on the basis
of different tax years.
Just because your wife had no
income in 1955 doesn't prevent
your filing a joint return. And,
even if you happened to have
been married New Year's Eve
before midnight of course you
can still include her in a joint
return. '
If your wife or husband died
during the year and you did not
re-marry before the close of the
year, you may file a joint return
for the full year. And,, under
certain circumstances, the bene
fit of income splitting Is allowed
to the surviving spouse for the
two following years.
The joint return usually works
out best and the law allows you
to choose whichever methods
costs you . the lesser amount, or
gives you the greater refund-
Even if your wife 7 worked a
little during the year earned
less than $600 ' perhaps: it will
probably be to your advantage
to file a joint return, rather than
let her, file separately and get
the refund.
If she filed a separate return,
you could not file a joint return
and you would also lose her as
an exemption.
If you do file a joint return,
you both must sign and you both
become liable for any balance
of tax due.
When filing a joint return,
you add together the husband's
and the wife's income and the
exemptions and the deductions
of both. And keep in mind that
if you file separate returns and
one of you itemizes deduc
tions, then the other must also
itemize.
A special tax rate table is pro-
vided on Form 1040 which auto
matically splits- the taxable
joint income reported. If your
computations show a balance of
tax due, attach a check or money
order for the full amount due,
made out to the "Internal Rev
enue Service," to your return
before mailing it to your district
director.

Back Stairs: Ike Should Make Up Own Mind
By MERRIMAN SMITH
United Press While House Writer
Washington (U.R) Back
stairs at the White House:
Some of the White House staff
are studiously ignoring the out
side pressure developing on
President Eisenhower to run for
a second term.
They say they want the Presi
dent' to make up his own mind
first. . " . , :
And yet some of Mrs. Eisen
hower's closest friends are meet
ing several times a week in
Washington, busy mapping plans
for corraling Ike votes this fall.
The locations of the rendez
vous are known only to police
and a few top advisors.
All of this is perfectly normal.
But it attracts attention because
GOP leaders have gone to great
lengths to assure the public
they have not discussed second
term politics with the President.
Maj. Gen. Howard McC. Sny
der, the President's doctor, is not
endearing himself to some of
his White House staff colleagues
by talking rather freely about
the chief executive's condition
and this prior to the big medical
checkup in a few days.
Most defintely, Dr. Snyder is
in no trouble with the President
who thinks that his physician is
a fine and competent man.
But there are those in the
family circle who would prefer
to have medical information on
the President reach the public
in a rather precise manner.
The doctors still don't want the
President- to amble around his
Gettysburg, Pa., farm when there
is an appreciable amount of ice
and snow covering the ground.
They don't like
of his slipping.
