Redmond Men Dies
From Electric Shock
; Prineville OI.R) Charlie
Clark, 51, of Redmond, was el
ectrocuted yesterday afternoon
when he contacted a 12,.000-volt
power line. - -
Clark was working as a sub
stitute lineman for Pacific Pow
er and Light Co. when the ac
cident occurred.
He and another lineman, Har
old Armstrong, were working oh
a pole 40 feet in the air at the
company's Owl Butte sub-station.,
Clark contacted the high volt
age line and fell across the wire
supports. Armstrong and line
foreman. Frank Tracey lowered
him to the ground.
Other crew members attempt
ed to revive Clark before he
was rushed to a hospital " in
Prineville where he was pro
nounced dead. -

Seoul, Korea (U.R) Four-year-old
orphan Kim Ok J a left
Korea today for the ' United
States and a new family who fell
in love with her sad-eyed picture
in a Pocatello, Ida., newspaper.
When the picture appeared in
the newspaper about a year ago,
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Vincent Carl
son, of North Pocatello, quickly
wrote the 'orphanage south .of
Seoul where the tiny miss was
living and began adoption pro
ceedings. ' -
Legal red tape finally was
overcome, and the girl left Seoul
City Airport in the care of Tong
Suk Moo, a 23-year-old American-Korean
student who will at
tend college in Oklahoma.
The Carlsons also are parents
of a six-year-old boy and a three-year-old
girl.
Edith Green Chosen
For Bnai Brith Award

day to receive the annual Bro
therhood award of the Portland
chapter of Bnai Brith. .
The award will be presented
Sunday. The late Gov. Paul Pat
terson received the honor last

Suspect Detained
In Death of Pair
New Orleans (U.R) FBI
agents arrested a 22-year-old
North Dakota man here last
night who they said admitted the
brutal hatchet slaying of a
Seattle couple on the West
Coast.
The man, identified as Donald
Wyciskala, a native of Bismark,
N.D., was still carrying the
blood-smeared hatchet he used
in the killing in a suitcase
when arrested. '
Wyciskala, who was riding to
Los Angeles with the victims,
said they kept nagging him
about his driving.
"There was a hatchet on the
floor of the front of the car," he
said. "I picked it up and hit him
over the head with it."
When Mrs., Askew screamed,
he struck her, he said.
Wyciskala left .Washington
Feb. 1 with the victims, James
B. Askew 49, and his wife, Mary,
43, Seattle.

Train From Tracks

of rock and earth crashed down
Baltimore & Ohio passenger
train at the hamlet of Scott Ha
ven early today and, toppled four
of eight cars to the edge of
Youghiogheny river.
Five of the 113 passengers
aboard . the train, en route to
Washington were taken to.Mc
Keesport Hospital,' but only one
required treatment. James Stern,
34, Pittsburgh, suffered a sprain
ed shoulder.
A boulder weighing" about 15
tons struck the middle of the
moving train. Three sleeping
coaches and a club car derailed
and overturned.
The last of the four derailed
cars came to rest only five feet
from the swift waters of the
river. Passengers, hurled from
their beds or seats, calmly help
ed crew members search for injured.

Jarred by Quakes
Los Angeles (U.R) Two
sharp but not serious earth
quakes which apparently origi
nated in mountains above New
hall jarred the Los Angeles area
last night. No damage was re
ported, but several interruptions
in telephone service were
reported.
The first shock at 6:17 p.m.
had a magnitude of 4.0, accord
ing to Dr. Charles Richter of
the California Institute of Tech
nology in Pasadena. The second
temblor, at-7:16 p.m. registered
an intensity of '4.6.
The quakes, which were cen
tered about 40 miles from Pasa
dena, were felt most sharply in
the Chatsworth area and in
mountain sections near Newhall
and Saugus along Highway 99.
Engineers To Find
Middle of Snake River

General Graydon W. Smith said
today he and Robert Y. Thorn
ton, Oregon's attorney general,
had agreed to let engineers find
the middle of the Snake river,

The chief legal officers of the
two states conferred on the mat
ter in Portland over the week
end. It is of concern because of
taxing problems arising from Id
aho Power Company's three
dam development of Hells Can
yon on the Snake.
Morrison-Knudsen company,
the prime contractor on the job,
has to know which state should
get the income taxes withheld
from the workers and which
state will be liable for indust
rial accident payments.
Truck-Trailers on
Great Lakes Proposed
Milwaukee (U.R) Shipping
big truck trailers "piggyback"
on the Great Lakes is proposed
by Municipal Port Director
Harry Brockel.
Brockel said the big trailers
could be put aboard ships at Mil
waukee and shipped to their des
tinations on the Great Lakes, or
put ashore at a port nearest
their destination. This would cut
many miles from regular truck
routes which skirt the lakes now.
Brockel said Atlantic ports
have had the service for some
time and it is being introduced
at Pacific ports. He said Mil
waukee would be a "natural"
for piggyback service for trucks
operating between Detroit and
Minneapolis-St. Paul with stops
at Grand Rapids, Mich., and
Milwaukee and Madison in Wis
consin.
Brockel said he would propose
the plan to authorities of the
American Asspciation of Port
Authorities.

Plan Double Wedding

Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier
II have announced they will be
married in a double-feature wed
ding in the Prince's tiny Euro
pean principality of Monaco on
April 18 and 19.
The , celebrated couple dis
closed their double wedding
dates yesterday after lengthy
conferences with Miss - Kelly's
family' in Philadelphia sfnd the
Prince's advisers in his home
land. The announcement said they
would first be wed in a civil
ceremony on April 18 and then
would be reunited again in a
Catholic ceremony on the follow
ing day, probably by the Bishop
of Monaco.

of O&C timber near Roseburg
have been sold by the bureau of
land management, it was an
nounced yesterday.
The 7,851,000 board feet 6f
timber'went for a total price of
$375,933.70. It had been ap
praised earlier at $263,689.15.

commerce officials here yester
day that "lack of cooperation"
"was the greatest single weakness

son of Albany filed his candidacy
today for Republican nomina
tion for governor. He said he
would "attempt to further the

for state representative from

Derailed Train
Smacks Junk Yard
Kokomo, Ind. (U.R) A Chi
cago to Cincinnati passenger
train jumped the tracks last
night and crashed into a junk
yard, demolishing trucks and
other obstacles in its path and
injuring 12 persons.
St. Joseph Hospital reported
none of the passengers or crew
men on the Pennsylvania Rail
road train was hurt seriously.
The two-unit diesel locomotive
landed upside down, another car
landed on its side, and three
others were derailed. The train
was picking up speed after leav
ing the station and headed acci
dentally into a spur line at the
Lutz Iron and Steel Co.
Engineer Ernest R. Crull, 67,
Richmond, Ind., said the wreck
was caused by an open switch
which sent the train piling into
a coal gondola standing on the
spur.

tired of papers, cardboard and
trash blowing into his property
from, a nearby shopping plaza.
Peter Rothwell claimed that
two years of pleading with the
town board failed to bring any
correction, so he decided to try
to embarrass the board and the
stores into action. He posted a
sign on his lawn that read:

ordinances is responsible for
this littered condition."

A British doctor sa-d today that
offering a cigarette to a friend
should be considered a social
crime rather than a courtesy.
Dr. W. H. Bond, of the Birm
ingham United Hospitals, told a
Rotary Club meeting there was
no doubt of the link between
cigarette smoking and lung-cancer
in offering a smoke to a
friend.
