Dr. Robert A.' Moore, presi
dent of the Association of Amer
ican Medical Colleges, recently
remarked that medical insur
ance is becoming like auto in
surance, with a certain amount
deductable. With such insurance
the owner pays the first 50 or
100 dollars and the - insurance
company picks , up the -rest of
the bill. -
What is needed tremendously
in America today is more catas
trophic health insurance.' Most
of us can pay an ordinary' doc
tor's bill but few of us can, pay
for the months of - illness and
hospitalization that follow a
fractured hip or a bad auto ac
cident. Fortunately, there. are
a number of insurance com
panies which sell such insurance.
Any good insurance broker
ought to be able to get persons
this type of policy. ,
Ovaries Have Value
In . these days when surgeons
often remove a middle-aged
woman's normal ovaries with
the idea that after her child
bearing days are over she does
not need them, and in the mean
time she might get an ovarian
cancer, it is good to read that
Dr. George C. Griffith,; of Los
Angeles, disagrees. He recently
warned the members of the
American Academy of Obstetrics
and Gynecology that removal of
the ovaries can do harm to the
blood vessels and circulatory sys
tem. He said. that the ovaries
are not useless to a woman after
the menopause; they still have
healthful functions.

Are Generous
I just read that in 1955, con
tributions to1 the Heart Fund
totaled $13,575,963. ; Over half
of . this money will now be used
for scientific, research in the
field of heart disease: Research
that will doubtless serve to cut
down on the $00,000 deaths that
such disease now' causes each
year. Probably 10,000,000 people
in America, . half of them chil
dren, suffer from some form of
heart disease.
It is' good that something is
being done to help these people
and to keep another 10 million
from being afflicted in the years
to come.
Dr. Alvarez regrets he hasn't
the time in which to read or
answer requests for information.

Gl Insurance Changes
An increasing number of
death cases in which the bene
ficiary of GI Insurance proceeds
was in doubt . because the in
sured veteran had failed to de
signate a. beneficiary is noted
by the Veterans Administration.
"Every GI insurance policy
holder should make sure the
Veterans Administration has
been .notified of the beneficiary
or beneficiaries . whom the vet
erans wants to receive the pro
ceeds of the policy," said S. T
Brannock, Officer in Charge of
the Medford, Veterans Adunini
stration office.
Brannock added . that any
beneficiary changes which the
policyholder wishes to make
from time to time should also
be recorded with the Veterans
Administration Office handling
his insurance accounts.
Other ' instances where the
Veterans Administration should
be notified of beneficiaries, or
changes in beneficiaries, Bran
nock said, are upon reinstate'
ment of lapsed GI' insurance or
conversion of term insurance to
a permanent plan policy.

Stevenson's Minnesota backers
said today Sen. Estes Kefauver
(D-Tenn.) would get no more
than about a third of the vote to
be cast in the presidential pri
mary in that state. " ' ,
The Minnesota - Democratic
primary 'March 20 will produce
the first clear test between the
two candidates for the presiden
tial nomination, although Ke
fauver is an underdog.
Stevenson did not consent to
run in the only earlier primary
in New Hampshire, where he
would be the underdog. But a
group of pro-Stevenson candi
dates for national convention
delegates was selected yesterday
for entry in the New Hampshire
primary and will campaign on
their- own.
But in Minnesota, both Kefau
ver and btevenson will have
their names on the ballot . at
the head of pledged -delegates
slates. A defeat for Kefauver
presumably would not be fatal
to his chances but Stevenson
might have trouble surviving de
feat in a state where he is the
heavy favorite. .
Stevenson and Kefauver also
are matched in the Florida pri
mary May 29 and in California
June 6. Both have been in the
pivotal state of California this
week end. .

tion's top labor leaders face a
major test of unity and harmony
today in the first conference of
the AFL-CIO Executive council
since its " historic merger last
year.
The labor leaders are meeting
in the "hostile" ground of Miami
Beach's vacation playground

representatives of 15 NATO
countries will meet here Feb.
20-27 for a sweeping review, of
western defense plans, it was
announced today.
The meetings were arranged
by the last session of the At
lantic Council on Dec. 16; They

both military and economic as
pects of western defense. r
