Mrs. Marie Jackson
Dies In Portland
Portland (U.R) Mrs. C. S.
(Marie) Jackson, 93ryear-old
widow of C. S. Jackson, founder
of the Portland Oregon Journal,
died quietly here Friday night
at her home.
Mrs. Jackson, active all her
long life, had not been reported
ill. She apparently suffered a
stroke about 10 p.m.
She married C. S. (Sam) Jack
son in 1886 when he was pub
lishing the Pendleton, Ore., East
Oregonian. Jackson launched the
Oregon Journal in Portland in
1902, after taking over a strug-'
gling four-months-old paper and
changing its name. He published
the paper until his death in 1924.
The daily newspaper then
passed to the hands of Mrs.
Jackson's son, Philip Ludwell
Jackson, who died in 1953. An
other son, Francis, was killed
while serving with American
Merchant Marine during World
War I.
A grandson, C. S. (Sam) Jack
son, died in a helicopter crash in
Portland in December, 1947.
Mrs. Jackson, who with her
son Philip, were principal own
ers of The Journal, took a high
interest in the paper and its
activities. Since the death of
Phil Jackson, The Journal has
been published by William M.
Knight. At the time of her death,
Mrs. Jackson was chairman of
the board of The Journal.

Game experts estimated that
the rabbit population of Wis
consin rose from 1,095,990 in
1954 to 1,364,659 in 1955. In the
same period, squirrels dropped
from 1,532,056 to 1,207,210.

to 25 million horses have been
retired from American farms,

SHOT MOTHER Marlene
Chomko, 16, leaves police
station at Scranton, Pa., after
being picked up for alleged
plan to kill her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph Chomko, so
she could inherit wealth
from her father's trucking
business. She admitted shoot
ing her mother in the back,
critically wounding her. Also
arrested were her boy friend,
Samuel Diana, . 22, and John
Pitta, 34, identified as the
"master-mind" of the plot.

Awards Road Bids
Salem (U.R) The State High
way department has awarded;' a
Klamath county grading and
paving contract to Warren
Northwest, Inc., of Portland on
low bid of $364,241.50.
The job involves 7.31 miles of
grading, paving and shoulder oil
ing on the east unit, Crescent
Lake junction-The Dalles-Cali-
forna junction section of the
Willamette highway, about 43
miles east of Oakridge and 10
miles south of Crescent.
Roy L. Houck and Sons, Sa
lem, was low bidder at $277,333
for 4.84 miles of grading and
paving and shoulder oiling on
the middle unit, Pendleton-Pilot
Rock section of the Pendleton-
John Day highway. about 5 Vi
miles south of Pendleton.
.- Tom' Lillebo, Reedspori, was
low bidder at $72,675 for con
struction of a 262-foot reinfrced
concrete deck girder bridge over
the Little Nestucca river at Meda
on the Little Nestucca highway.
Hill A. Lind, Beaverton, bid
ding $47,710, won the contract
for .27 miles of grading on the
Short, creek section of the Cape
Meares loop road, about 1.2 miles
north of Oceanside.
Three Injured When
Explosion Rips House
Longview, Wash. U.R) A
teen-age mother and her two
small daughters were recover
ing Saturday from injuries suf
fered when a water heater ex
ploded and destroyed their
home near here.
The mother, Mrs. Don Maples,
19, and her 8-months-old daugh
ter, DeAnn, were blown through
a kitchen wall by the force of
the explosion. Donna, IVz, was
pinned beneath wreckage. Mrs.
Maples suffered leg cuts and
multiple bruises; DeAnn suffer
ed severe burns and cuts, and
Donna suffered a head injury
and cuts. All suffered shock,
concussion and burns.
Neighbors said they heard a
roar and saw steam coming from
the house. They found Mrs.
Maples and the baby lying in
the snow. The two-bedroom
house was wrecked by the
blast Thursday. A heavy elec
tric range was blown through
the wall.
Cause of the explosion was
undetermined. 1 . . .

wear hats more intelligent than
those who habitually go hatless?
That question is currently being
heatedly discussed by many of
our countrywomen. I believe the
query should be amended . to
ready: "are women who are in
terested in hats more intelligent
than those who are not?" The
hat enthusiasts are probably
smarter than those who never
give headgear . a thought. How
ever, I understand the reason
many women rarely wear hats
at this time is because of the
difficulty in acquiring a hat that
suits them. One that enhances
their appearance rather than
handicapping it. In brief, the la
dies appear firm in their belief
that a hat should dp something
for a woman, not something to
her.

For Co-Terminus
Prtland -(U.R) The Portland
Chamber of Commerce has been
urged to make a strong bid for
commercial airline connections
between Portland and Europe
via the North Pole after air line
officials said they hoped to make
Portland a co-terminus of the
polar flights. I
Harold Say, Washington rep
resentative of 4he chamber, has
asked the Civil Aeronautics
board to hold hearings on the
polar route in Portland May 15.
The Aviation committee of the
chamber voted unanimously to
recommend chamber interven
tion in the hearings to put Port
land on the new intercontinental
air map. .
Both Trans World Airways
and Pan American have applied
for certificates to serve the route
and officials for both told the
Aviation committee they
planned to make Portland a co
terminus with San Francisco and
Seattle.,
Westerners now may travel to
Europe via the pole only by
Scandinavian Airlines from Los
Angeles or Canadian "Pacific
from Vancouver, B. C.
Elderly Couple Burn
To Death At Riddle
Eoseburg U.R) An eld
erly couple burned to death last
night in a fire which destroyed
their home at Riddle junction,
south of here. '
' State police identified the vic
tims as Forrest R. Ream, 62,
and his wife, Manrie, 63.
The fire, which was discover
ed by a passing truck driver,
David A. Trudeau, about 11:30
p.m. apparently was caused by
a defective flu on a heating
stove, state police said.
A survey by the South Dakota
soil conservation service . indi
cates that shelterbelt windbreaks
increase crop yields an average
of eight and a half bushels an
acre.
