Appeal Goal Told
For Overseas Aid;
Projects Numbered
Major Protestant and Eastern
Orthodox churches in America
are seeking nearly 11 million
dollars in the 1956 United Ap
peal for overseas programs of
relief and reconstruction. The
goal is nearly one million, five
hundred thousand dollars great
er than that of 1955.
A major portion of the in
crease in funds sought 'will be
used in taking advantage of the
doubled "share our surplus" op
portunity made possible by the
recent release of wheat, corn,
beans and rice from this coun
try's surplus stocks for free dis
tribution to the needy abroad by
religious and other voluntary
overseas relief groups.
This is the 8th annual coop
erative effort of the denomina
tions working together to meet
the need .for - emergency relief
and for economic and spiritual
rehabilitation abroad.
Special Offering
Highlight of the appeal will
be the "One Great Hour of
Sharing," observances set for
Sunday, March 11, when a spe
cial relief offering will be made
throughout the churches in this
country. The funds will provide
food, medicines and other sup
plies; long-term health and nu
trition programs, resettlement
and rehabilitation of refugees,
self-help projects and vocational
training and other ministries to
the homeless.
Among the major overseas
areas to be aided by the 1956
appeal are India, Parkiston, Ko
rea, the Near East, Japan,
Greece, Germany, Italy, Vietnam
and Hongkong.
New Faith Advent
Location Announced
Faith Advent Christians, a
new church group, with Fred
Lee as pastor, will meet at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Bryan
Gossett, 1329 Saling ave., while
waiting location and erection of
a church building, it was an
nounced this week.
The congregation was only
recently organized. Sunday
school classes for all ages will
be conducted at 9:45 a.m., wor
ship at 11 a.m., Sundays, and
Wednesday prayer meetings at
T p.m. The pastor will speak
t the morning service. Anyone

Judge Throws Out
Portland Demurrer
Portland (U.R) Circuit Judge
Martin W. Hawkins yesterday
threw out of court an. attempt by
esat side Portland interests to
block construction of an exposi
tion center on the west sidv'of
the city. ' ' '" ; ' . '
Judge Hawkins sustained a
demurrer filed by the city at
torney's office which said the
east side suit for an injunction
did not. state a cause of action.
Still in the way of construc
tion of the $8,000,000 center was
an initiative petition drive
launched by the east side inter
ests to force the entire"; issue to
another vote of the people in the
May primary election.
Pilgrim Holiness
Youth Will Meet
Tonight for Rally
The most important event of
youth week as it is being observ
ed by the Pilgrim Holiness
churches of this area, is a youth
rally, to be held at the Central
Point church of the denomina
tion, tonight at 7:30 p.m.
The Rev. Ed Harmon, pastor
of the Friends church, Ashland,
will be speaker. On the pro
gram will be a panel discussion
and musical numbers by the
young people. Klamath Falls,
Roseburg, Grants Pass," Medford
and Central Point youth will
participate in the service. The
Rev. C. P. Jackson of "Klamath
Falls is chairman.
Confucianism Topic
for Unitarian Group
Confucianism will be the dis
cussion topic for the Unitarian
fellowship meeting to be held
Sunday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m., in

Campaign To Open
The Rev. R. Robert Crawford,
Portland headquarters of the
Apostolic Faith, will be in charge
of an evangelistic campaign
which will open Sunday, Feb.
12 at the local church of that
faith, Central ave. at Third st.,
the Rev. C. W. 'Frost, pastor an
nounced this week.
The Rev. Mr. Crawford also
is general overseer of the world
wide religious organization,- and
editor of the publication, "The
Apostolic Faith.". He heads the
Apostolic Faith Publishing house
in Portland.
Formerly a pilot he now is
captain and navigator of the
missionary vessel, "Lower
Light" used hi the Puget sound
area. Most of the' crew will be
in Medford for the meetings.
The Rev. . Vernon Schroeder,
engineer, and Max " Hansen,
bosun, a former Danish seaman,
will be speakers, i ". " "
The vesper concert trio will
furnish preludes.
The local orchestra, chorus

months : have . brought pic
tures, engravings and mats
io the newspaper office for
publication, lo pick them
up at their convenience
: within the next few weeks.
So many of them are now
on hand that the newspaper
can no longer assume re
sponsibility for them. If
they are not taken within
a reasonable lime, it will be
assumed they are no longer,
desired by the groups which
brought them in, and will be
discarded. :

John Dellenback
To Address Group;
Tea Is Scheduled
John Dellenback, of Van Dyke
and Dellenback attorneys, will
address an adult interest group
at the First Methodist church,
Sunday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m., on
the subject, "The Political Issues
of 1956."
Other ' interest groups for
adults will include a Mission
study led by Ben Schmidt, and
an adult membership class led
by the Rev. . Mrs. Anne Gorby.
Interest groups at the, same hour
are provided for all ages for
pre-school children to- adults.
A snack supper will be served
by the Shipmates Sunday school
class at 6:30 p.m., and the closing
worship will be led by Dr. J.
Thomas Dixon.

J. State Senator Mark Hatfield
will be honored at a tea for all
high school seniors and . their
parents at the church at 3 pjn.
Mr. Hatfield; who will, address
an Interdenominational rally at
6:30 p. m., will be available to
give information with respect to
Willamette ' university, Salem,
where . he ' is dean of students.
The tea is sponsored by the com
mission Son '.education of the
church, Mrs. Frank Van Dyke,

be Dr. Balcomb's sermon subjest
at the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services
of. worship as he continues his
series of great passages of the
Bible. The Youth and Chancel
choirs under direction of Mrs.
George Sloniger and Mrs. C. R,
Adamson;, will sing.
. Laws of 16 of the states, from
New Hampshire and New Jersey
in the east, Idaho and Wash
ington in the west, now have
statutes which prohibit segrega
tion in the schools.

The Rev. Ed Hum, for four
years pastor of the Church of
the Nazarene in Richland, Wash.,
is .scheduled to speak in both
services Sunday, Feb. 5, at Med
xord Kazarene. -:
' Younger brother of the local
Nazarene pastor, the Rev. Mr.
Hum is in Medford participating
in Youth week activities at the
Church of the Nazarene located
at Holly and First sts.
He is scheduled to speak to
night in a - valley-wide- service
conducted by the youth of Ash
land, .. Phoenix, and Medford
churches and will speak for both
the "morning worship,: and the
evening talent service Sunday
at 7:30 p.m. ;
The Nazarene young people
plan a trip to the snow Saturday
morning and a potluck dinner
S iturday night. The' entire week
has been devoted to the youth of
the church, ' the young people
leading in all worship services.
Word was received this week
that Lee Mansveld, religious mu
sician .will appear in the spring
evangelistic campaign scheduled
for Feb. 15-26 in "the Church of
the Nazarene. Mr. Mansveld is
minister .of music at Pasadena,
Calif., First Church of the Naza
rene, and much in demand in
youth rallies and conventions.
Eastwood Baptists
To Receive Members
' The hand of fellowship will
be extended to new members
who were voted into the fellow
ship of the Eastwood Baptist
church at an annual meeting
Sunday at the 11 a.m., service.
The Lord's supper will also be
observed.
The Women's choir will sing
and the pastor, Richard M.
Jones, will speak on the theme,
"Little Rooms Where New
Worlds Are Made."
