    Yanks Face
Russians in
Hockey Fray
Cortina, Italy U.R) The
most dramatic face-to-face clash
of the United States and Russia
In the 1956 Winter Olympic
games will take place tonight
with the ice hockey champion
ship hanging in the balance.
A week ago you couldn't have
found an expert here who would
have given the Yanks a chance
in this clash with the swift So
viets.
But today the rousing, high-
spirited play of the Americans
in their victories over Canada
and Sweden had won them a
host of followers. Coach Johnny
Mariucci Evelth, Minn., thinks
his teams can win; his players
are certain of it: and the experts
no.w figure they are no worse
than even money.
The , two teams headed into
he earne tied for the lead in the
championship competition. The
Russians haven't lost a smgie
came here: the Americans have
lost only a preliminary round
game that doesn't aneci xne 11
nal standings. ,.. . ,
If the Americans win this one,
they can wrap up the Olympic
title by beating Chechoslovakia
tnmnrrnw. If the Russians win
it, they can take the crown by
Vioatinff Panada tomorrow. 11
feithpr wins todav and then loses
tomorrow, a three-way tie for
the title could result.

- San Francisco (U.R) Wash

in what may be the tell-tale
series for the Pacific Coast Con

berth' in the NCAA play-offs.
Although both, teams have
been bounced around more than
somewhat in non-conference en
gagements, : they look powerful
inside their own loop.'
UCLA, with an over-all record
of 10 wins against five defeats,
has a perfect 4-0 record inside
the conference; the Huskies, win
ners of nine and beaten seven
times over-all, have a 5-1 mark
in league play.
..'This clash is expected to steal
some of the thunder from the
upstart California Basketball
Association race, which will
feature the University of San
Francisco Dons going after their
42nd consecutive triumph, to
night against Loyola of Los An
geles.
New Star
UCLA fans who have , been
used to watching such great per
formers as Moorie Taft and
Willie Naulls in action, will get
to see something new in Bruno
(Bonco) Boin one of the finest
young hook-shot artists to come
along in recent years. '
Boin is only 18 years old and
a sophomore, but he stands six
feet, eight inches tall and still
is , growing. He has developed
an overhead hook, shot from the
corner, of the floor that is tre
mendously successful and so far
this season tie has averaged 16
points per game which isn't
bad for just a beginner.
But the Bruins, playing in
their own back yard, are slight,
favorites to win and help Coach
Johnny Wooden along toward an
other championship. In his seven
previous years at UCLA, Wood
en has led his club to five divi
sion championships , 1 and two
league crowns. There is no divi

Nationals Halt
Losing Streak
By UNITED PRESS
. The Syracuse Nationals, de
fending champions in the Na
tional Basketball association,
were ready to launch a drive for
a playoff berth today now that
team - Captain Paul Seymour is
back in harness. y
Fully recovered from a broken
wrist suffered early last month,
Seymour came off the bench
Thursday; night to spark the Na
tionals to a comeback 97-89 vic
tory over the Rochester Royals.
. It was the Nats' first victory
in their last four games and
moved them to within three
games of the third-place. New
York Knickerbockers, who drop

team league.
Still, Trying ,
Southern California, which
also is in the running for the tilte
with a 5-1 record in conference
play, takes on Oregon on the
Webfoots home floor. Oregon
has a 2-4 record inside the loop
but in this league, it always is
hard to win a game away from
ahead for Tony Psaltis and corn
home, so there may be trouble
pany.
In other conference series of
the week-end, California plays
host to the defending champion
Oregon State Beavers and if
the game goes according to
Hoyle, it will be a surprise.
So far at California there have
been the penny throwing and
deep freeze episodes so Coach
Pete Newell probably would
just as soon 'play some straight,
old-fashioned race-horse basket
ball. The Bears will be favored.

Baker and lanky Tommy (Hur
ricane) Jackson, two high heavy
weight contenders with sharply
contrasting styles, will fight to
night m a TV-radio elimination
10-rounder at' Madison Square
garden.
The winner can continue to
campaign for a September title
shot at Rocky Marciano. "Rocky
definitely will not be ready un
til September," Manager Al
Weill said today.
Baker of Pittsburgh is favored
at 9-5 to beat clownish Jackson
of Far Rockaway, N.Y.,-because
of his 13 straight victories, his
superior boxing skill and his
harder punch. Also big Bob is
ranked second among contend
ers; Jackson, third.
However, Tommy's admirers
claim the 22-year-old hurricane
has just the style to beat lethar
gic, 29-year-old Baker, a plod
ding counter-puncher who lacks
aggressiveness.

In Physical Fitness Tests
. A five-member University of
Oregon team will be in Medford
on Feb. 14 to conduct physical
fitness tests at the senior high
school.
Medford is among high schools
in 12 Oregon cities which have
accepted invitations to partici
pate in a pilot physical fitness
program. Invitations were issued
by the Oregon Association for
Health,-Physical Education and
Recreation through, its central
physical fitness committee.
Portland, Salem, Eugene,
Springfield, Willamette, Rose
burg, Coos Bay, Klamath Falls,
Bend, Pendleton and Baker
schools are others participating.
Superintendent of Schools Leon
ard Mayfield accepted for Med
ford. University of Oregon testing
teams under the direction of Dr.
H. Harrison Clarke, are visiting
each of the high schools to ad
minister physical fitness index
tests to 100 boys and 100 girls.
Following the testing, the pupils
with the lowest PFI scores will
be selected for special develop
mental activities to , improve
their physical fitness.
Individual Needs
- This program will be adapted
to meet the individual needs of
pupils based upon studies of the
cause of the low fitness of each
pupil. Emphasis will be thus
placed upon those boys and girls
who are subpar physically. At
the end of three months, retests
will be given at each of the
schools to determine pupil prog
ress and program effectiveness.
The testing will serve to check
on the physical fitness of boys
and girls in Oregon high schools,
This check is regarded as par
ticularly important at this time
in view of figures on the com
parative 'fitness of American
and European children appear

Driscoll, 59 year's old, Thurs

and owner of the club, George
Halas, as the new coach of the
team Halas himself tutored for
30 years. Halas celebrated his
61st birthday with the appoint

either on offense or defense.
Driscoll, a former star back at
Northwestern and with both the
Bears and ' Chicago Cardinals,
was an assistant to Halas for
the past 15 years and promptly
announced "we'll keep the same
system."

Extra Strength -
If your fields are tough for disking, take a look at the
good-work advantages you get in a John Deere "KB" or
"KC" Disk Harrow. Built with an extra margin of
strength and weight, these husky harrows combine
maximum penetration, long life, and extreme ease of
handling to give you the kind of performance you need.
Ideal for most heavy disking jobs, the "KB", with
regular disk spacing, is available in sizes from 5- to
10-foot. For trashy or difficult stalk conditions, choose
the extra-heavy "KC' with wide disk spacings. Avail
able in 6- and 7-12-foot sizes. See us for further in
