    Science Making Headway in
Artery 'Hardening1 Study
By DELOS SMITH
United Press Science Ediior
New York (U.R) Although
progress is slow, science defi
nitely is making headway in its
search for ways of preventing
human arteries from "harden
ing" and stopping the "harden
ing" process once it has started.
Take the experiments of a
doctor of philosophy in chemis
try and a doctor of veterinary
medicine with flocks of white
Leghorn cockerels and with sev
eral chemical and non-potable
forms of alcohol.
One of the alcohols was cho
lesterol, which the animal body
extracts from its food but also
manufactures on its own and in
some bodies ,collects in crystal
line form inside arteries. This
"hardens" the arteries and sets
the stage for heart attacks and
for the mental debilities of old
age.
Another alcohol was of the
same chemical class but a prod
uct of the soybean in its germ
ination, growth and maturing.
The third alcohol was the result
of a chemist's manipulations in
his laboratory. It was a salt of
an ester, or compound, of an
alcohol.
Four Flock
0"r scientists, Thomas B.
Clarkson, D.V.M., J . Stanton
King Jr.. Ph. D.,. and Nelta Hy
der Warnock, B.S., of Bristol,
Tenn., quite aware that these
alcohols somehow react upon
one another, divided their white
cockerels into four flocks.
All were fed on the same mash
to which cholesterol had been
added. But the soy bean alcohol
was added to the mash of flock
number two, the man-made al
cohol was added to that of flock
number three, and both the soy
r bean and man-made substances
were added to the mash of flock
number four.
- As was to be expected, the
circulating cholesterol in the
blood streams of all four flocks
shot up. That of the- cholesterol-
only flock went the highest. That
of the flock which got both cho
lesterol and the man-made al
cohol was second highest. And
that of the flock which got both
soybean and man-made alcohols
was the lowest.
The conclusion is dramatic
but not explained. Somehow the
man-made alcohol enhanced the
chemical ability of the soy bean
alcohol to hold down circulating
cholesterol. When the scientists
analyzed the main heart arteries
of their cockerels for deposited
cholesterol content, they got the
same : results but even more
strikingly:' -.-. 1 '.. T"
Meanwhile, an experimental
wav of lowering cholesterol con
tent of circulating human blood
and holding steady at the low
ered levels was made available
for a limited number of physi
cians through the Vascular Re
search Foundation of 815 Park
Avenue, New York. It is a com
pound of vitamins and thyroid
hormone and still is not on the
market and so is not to be had
merely by prescription.
This way is based on the pre
mise that artery-hardening de
pends basically upon body cells
which have lost the knack of
dealing with oxygen efficiently.
A . correct balance of vitamins
and hormone is said to restore
the knack.
