Castillo's 'Coronet Line'
!n Paris Sprinq Collection
By BARBARA MILLER
United Press Correspondent
Paris (U.R) Woman's strug
gle for womanly curves ran to
day into the upside down ice
cream cone effect of Lanvin-Cas-tillo's
"coronet line" which
makes bosoms precariously high
and almost extin,ct. , .
Castillo of Lanvin came forth
yesterday with the only "look"
worthy of (he name of this sea
son. Today, on the third day of
the Paris spring dress collec
tions, Jean Desses is presenting
a more conservative , approach
toward the fashionable silhou
ette for the next six months. '
Castillo's coronet line feature
a silhouette which flared out
from shoulder to hem . . . the
waistline - often moved up to
where the bust used to be. The
bustline ... almost non-existent.
Castillo also came up with
"canezousy-flared, waist length
boleros for daytime dresses. The
canezous gave the effect of two
ice cream cones nestled one on
top of the other.
Underneath the canezous,
princess-style dresses flared out
in one continuous line broken
only by drapes knotted under
the bust, or breast-high mar
tingales. Maternity Look
Castillo's "maternity" look in
dance dresses . startled even his
most fervent admirers. Flounces
jutted out from under the bust
line, in one and two tiers, in
what can only be described as
a very pregnant way. The man
nequin's forward carriage height
ened this impression.
, Underlining his' shortened
bustline, Castillo showed diago
nal midriff pockets, and appli
qued fringed ribbons. To heJght
en his cone' silhouette, he placed
sequined bows and Spanish
combs atop the mannequin's
chignon. ,
Tall crowned hats and sloping
wavy brims topped the "coro
net" by day. '
His coats won applause. Flared
in a single line by day, they
took on . foreign glamour at
night.
A Favorite
The "burnoose" was a favor
ite Of a black satin striped in
white, the hooded wrap was
lined and edged with white chif
fon. Underneath, a white chiffon
dress flowed out under the bust
in a less exaggerated line.
In a late night show, Maggy
Rouff chalked up another defeat
for the pro-bosom' couturiers.
Her styles brought reminiscent
sighs from all former 1920 flap
pers. In general, this is a bit
behind the times but certain de
tails are to be found in many
1956 collections.
Bosomless and waistless, her
clothes dropped to the hips' and
were fixed there with low-slung
martingales and buttoned panels.
Many jersey and wool dresses
were gathered on bands. This
detail fitted dresses under the
bosom and at the hips. Jackets
were caught low in back.-
