Search River For AF Plane Which Ran Out Of Fuel; Two Killed
Pittsburgh (U.P.) The police
river patrol searched the swift
moving Monongahela River here
today for a twin-engine B25 Air
Force bomber which ran out of
fuel, crashed and sank with the
loss of two lives.
The plane hit the water Tues
day afternoon about five miles
southeast of Pittsburgh's Golden
Triangle, where the Mononga
hela and Allegheny rivers join
to form the Ohio River. Four
Air Force men aboard were res
cued, but two were missing and
presumed dead.
The crash site was about eight
miles downstream from where
a transport ditched Dec. 22,
1954, with a loss of 10 lives.
Nine of the dead were holiday
bound servicemen. That plane
also ran out of fuel.
Inadequate Fuel Supply
The Air Force launched an
Immediate investigation to learn
why the bomber, en route from
Las Vegas, Nev., to Washing
ton, D.C., apparently left Self
ridge Air Force Base, Mich., its
last stop before crashing, with
an inadequate fuel supply.
The Air Force identified the
missing as Capt. Jean P. In
ghram, 29, of South Charleston,
W. Va., and S-Sgt. Walter E.
Soocey, 32, of Alaska.
The survivors were listed as
the pilot, Maj. William L. Dod
son, commander of the Neliis
AFB Weather Office; Co-pilot
Capt. John Jamieson, of Mechan
icsburg, Pa.; M-Sgt. Alfred J. Al
leman, 38, Neliis AFB, and Air
man 2-c Charles L. Smith, 19,
of Philadelphia.

Monday evening when the fam
ily car slipped off blocks as he
was working underneath it.
The Lane county sheriff's of
fice reported that the boy was
working with his father, George
Smith, and a neighbor, James
Viner, installing a new battery

The car had been propped up
on wooden blocks and rocks
placed to hold the wheels in
place on the hillside where it
was parked.
The boy crawled under the
car to hold up the battery sup
port, reached forward and took
hold of the bumper to move him
self forward when the car slip
ped off the supports crushing
him beneath the front axle. '

"Titan," which put out from the
nearby Jones & Laughlin steel
plant dock immediately after the
crash.
The Monongahela was swol
len by a recent thaw and run
ning faster than normal when
the plane crashed.
