Adult Classes For
Second Semester A
High School Listed
Registration for nine second
semester adult evening classes
will be held Thursday and Fri
day, Feb. 2 and 3, according to
Elliott Becken, assistant super
intendent of Medford schools,
which sponsor the classes.
Becken said anyone interest
ed may register by telephone.
The number is 3-5341. The Med
ford Senior High school Girls'
League under the direction of
Mrs. Grace Berg, dean of girls,
is handling registration.
Becken said the purpose of ad
vance registration is to deter
mine whether enough adults are
interested to hold the classes.
The classes are adult self-im-rjrovement
courses, and no
school credit is given, he ad'
ded. Persons 16 years old and
over who are not attending
school may register.
Classes Listed
The classes, place, time and
instructor follows:
Driver Training 30 hours of
instruction in six weeks. The
first week is classroom instruc
tion between 4 and 5 p.m. in
room 11 at Medford Senior High
school with the remainder of the
time-behind-the - wheel instruc
tion. The classes will start Mon-,
day, Feb. 6, with Max Guiley as
instructor
Industrial arts project class
Individual wood-working with
instruction in hand and machine
tool operations, construction
methods and finishing tech
niques. The 10-week course will
start Monday, Feb. 6, at 7 p.m
It will last until 10 p.m. each
meeting in the industrial arts
shop at McLoughlin High school
with Vera Voss as instructor. .,
Tailoring Two classes will be
held for women with consider
able skill , in sewing who are
interested in tailoring. One class
will be held between 1 and 4 pm.
Mondays, starting Feb. 6 in room
9 at McLoughlin Junior High
. school. The other class will be
held between 7 'and 10 p.m. in
room 6 at Medford Senior High
school starting Wednesday, Feb.
8. Mrs. Hazel McKinstry will be
instructor for the 11 -week
course.
Clothing Construction
Clothing construction The
class is for women who wish to
improve their sewing. The class,
which is limited to 14 partici
pants, will be held between 7:30
and 9:30 p.m. starting Tuesday,
Feb. 7, in room 6 at Medford
Senior High school. Mrs. Ronald
James will be instructor.
Slack making Instruction is
offered in designing slack pat
terns, cutting . and fitting pro
cedures, and measurements and
alterations. Some experience in
sewing techniques is required.
The class, which will be taught
by Mrs. Orma Farnham, will be
held between 1 and 4 p.m.'
Thursdays, starting . Feb. . 9, in,
room 9 of McLoughlin Junior
High school.
Lamp Shades Instructions in
techniques of making lamp
shades for the home will be of
fered in the 10-week course. The
class will meet between 7 and
10 pim. each Thursday starting
Feb. 9 in room 9 at McLoughlin
Junior High school. Mrs. Fran
ham will instruct the class.
Cake Decorating
Cake decorating Two classes
will be offered and consist of
work from simple decorations
and advance through three types
of complex decorations. One
class is scheduled for 10 weeks
between 1 and 4 p.m. Tuesdays
starting Feb. 7. The other class
will be held between 7 and 10
p.m. Tuesdays starting Feb. 7.
Both classes will be held in room
9 at McLoughlin Junior High
school with Mrs. Franham in
structing. Water-color painting The
course will be an advanced class
with 10 sessions between- 7:30
and 9:30 p.m. starting Monday,
Feb. 6. The class, taught by War
ren Wolf, will be held in room 5,
Medford Senior High school.
Drawing and sketching The
class is a continuation of the fail
class. There will be six classes
between 7 and 9:30 p.m. Mon
days starting Feb. 6 in room 7
of McLoughlin Junior High
school. Steve Bayless will be in
structor. ;
School officials pointed out
that people interested in taking
courses should not purchase ma
terials for any course until after
conferences with instructors. --.

Hollywood (U.R) One of. the,
unsung geniuses of television is
a man who writes a song every
day all be
cause Jimmy
Durante mur
ders popular
music.
On the Du
rante show
you see his
credit line . . .
"Songs by
Jackie Bar-
Aline Mosby nett." That's
his only notice for turning out
the equivalent of a Broadway
show almost every week.
For each program Jackie pens
seven songs some of them
dashed off in five minutes, mak
ing him probably the ; world's
fastest tunesmith. He also has
the distinction " of furnishing
tunes for the only regular TV
show that has original music.
He Can't Sing
"It's all because Durante can't
sing popular songs," Jackie ex
plained today when I tracked
him down at NBC's television
studios.
"He does a type of music we
call Durante music. It's bom
bastic. Popular songs just aren't
geared for him."
Jackie started out as a gag
writer for the program and
graduated to his unique post of
song writer. By now he has turn
ed out more than 600 original
songs for the Durante show. Aft
er spirited arguments, he has
even induced the sentimental
Durante to try singing mambos
and spirituals.
The Drosram's writers often
order certain sones from Jackie.
Other times Jackie will be in
spired to do a tune and has the
writers fashion a show around
it. The fastest time was turning
out a ditty titled "Crazy Jimmy
Style" in four minutes for Janet
Blair to sing.
"I just went into the next
room and wrote it," Barnett says
casually.
Jackie has one frustration.
Most of his original tunes are
buried forever after the TV
show.- Some are too Durante-ish
for others to sing. Most Jimmy
prefers to keep for himself. Di
nah Shore and Danny Thomas
once asked to use Jackie's songs,
but "Schnoz" turned them down.
Some Barnett tunes have
slipped into general use, how
ever. Helen Traubel uses one to
close her night lub act. Jimmy
has recorded several and sings
others in his nightclub act.
He Saves Songs
Jackie feels his amazing out
put of songs is of one great ben
efit it saves popular songs
from being massacred by Dur
ante.' "Years ago Durante was re
sponsible for a big hit," related
Barnett.
"I heard 'Nature Boy' and told
Jimmy, "This has a lot of heart.
It would be a change of pace for
you.' Jimmy sat down and sang
it for me."
Barnett then did for- me a
fabulous imitation of Durante
singing. "Nature Boy." "A little
shy . . . and sad of eye . . . and
what a bum was he ..."
"I said, Jimmy, better forget
it," Barnett went on. "He never

that song went on to become one
of the biggest hits in the last 15
years!"

had fallen and broken a bone in
her forearm and is now at the
