NOW IT'S FLYING BARRELS The Office of Naval Re
search in -Washington has awarded the Kaman SUrcraft
Corp. of Bloomfield, Conn., a contract to conduct research
on an annular-wing or ring-wing type aircraft. Artist's
conception shows the craft to be a circular, or barrel-
shaped wing which is open at each end with fuselage sup
ported inside the barrel wing. It would combine advantages -.
of the airplane and the helicopter.
Oil The Side By E. V. Durling
(Distributed by King Future Syndicate. Inc.)
Hear not danger's trampling feet,
Feel not sorrow's wintry sleet,
Trust that life is just and sweet
With my arms around you.
. Lip on lip and eye to eye,
, Love to love, we live, we die,
No more you and no more I,
We and only we!
Houghton.
A woman over 30 who blushes
easily is a rarity. Most, women
cease blushing in their 20s. How
ever, Greer G a r s o n blushes
easily. Once an interviewer ask
ed her, "What is your husband's
pet name for you?" The lovely
Greer in an unexpected burst of
confidence answered, "Pidgie
Widgie." And then she blushed.
Please Note
It is reported every employee
of an Arizona race course wears
a ribbon inscribed "I work here
may I help you?" That can be
described as chummy, coopera
tive or corny. All depends on the
point of view The country's two
most efficiently handled race
courses, Santa Anita and' Mon
mouth Park, achieved their repu
tation without placarding their
people. Incidentally, before be
coming an actress, Eve Arden
worked in a department store.
She quit after an argument with
a floorwalker as to whether she
should say to prospective cus
tomers, "Can I help you?" or
"May I help you?"
Longevity
Eugene Christian, author of
"How to Live to Be a Hundred,"
died at the age of 69. Eugene
Brewer, the inventor of the
lawnmower, lived to be over
100. He attributed his longevity
to the exercise he had mowing
lawns. Feminine subscribers
might clip this item and save
it to show to their husbands next
summer when they start to com
plain about having to mow the
iawn too often.
That Mustache
It has been said most men
who -grow mustaches do so to
conceal a weak mouth. So, when
a bachelorette is Drooosed to bv
a man with a mustache, she
should demand a chance to see
how , he looks clean shaven be
fore she agrees to join him in
matrimony.
Paige's Age .
How old is "Satchel" Paige,
the most durable player in the
history of baseball? Nobody
knows the answer to that, not
even "Satchel" himself. Paige's
official biographical sketch -in
the American League files is as
follows: "Leroy Robert (Satchel)
Paige, Born in Mobile, Ala., on
either July 17, September 11,
September 18 or September 22,
somewhere between 1900 and
1908."

Get It Right .
Clark Gable, has appeared op
posite more than 35 leading
ladies. If you ever get in an
argument as to who was Gable's
first leading lady, please be in
formed it was none other than
that Brooklyn beauty named
Helen Twelvetrees.
Briefly
Am asked if there "really is
a dish called angels on horse
back." Certainly is: It is a com
bination of oysters, bacon, fried
bread and parsley . . . the most
prevalent of chronic diseases in
the world is rheumatism. In the
United States alone there are
nearly 7,000,000 people who suf
fer from this ailment.
Torrid Tales
Are you a young women of
21 or thereabouts? Are you given
to perusing torrid novels? Do
you think the novels you read
are as torrid as those when your
mother was a whistle girl? What
follows is an excerpt from a best
seller of the yesteryear: "Her
body was aching with the grip
of his powerful arms, her mouth
was bruised with his savage
kisses." That is from "The
Sheik" by E. M. Hull.
