reporter's observation after four
days among the insane is that it
is easy to understand why it is
so difficult to interest so-called
sane people in their past, pres
ent, and future.
It's an insult to us a slap in
the face the way they have the
nerve to be so much like us, and
yet so different. They're ter
ribly ill these people; they didn't
will it and they cant' help it, any
more than a person ill of cancer
or tuberculosis can help it.
But these people seem to car
icature us, to mimic and mock
us. I saw a young woman cud
dling a tiny object in tenderly
folded arms. From a distance,
she looked 'Sike a young mother
with her first born. Her "baby"
was a rubber doll unfortu
nately, unhappily, and tragical
ly. This reporter's first reaction
was emotional. Reporters, how
ever, have to deal with facts and
so should all of us. One fact is
that "sanity" and "insanity" are
most inept words. There is
neither pure white nor complete
black. Grays begin with gray
wlftte and darken into blackish
grays but they're all grays and
they're all human beings, those
who are mentally well5 and ill.
Cures Are Possible
'. Another fact is that science
can, in all probability, find the
causes and the remedies for
mental diseases but could find
thesa much sooner if enough of
us provided the encouragement
of interest and support upon
which science and everything
else thrives.
The answers are buried within
til of us because mental illnesses
are bound up in the mysteries of
why and how we human beings
behave as we do. The abnormal
behavior of the mentally ill
merely is a variant of normal
behavior. Dr. Robert A. Cohen,
director of clinical investigations
at the National Institute of Men
tal Health pointed it out, and it
'. is obvious enough.

superintendent. He had a ward
of 20 "untidy" patients. Let's
not mince words "untidy" sim
ply means, not toilet-trained.

20 became trainable, at least in

A miracle, you say. And it
was. But Dr. Rudy had another
batch of "untidy" patients. Their
ward had to be painted and there
was no place to put them. He
distributed them by one and
twos in the "tidy" wards and,
in his words, "waited for the

chemical analysis, Dr. Earle R
Caley of Ohio State University
is able to tell if coins and other
ancient brass objects are the real
thing.
By studying coins of known
date, the professor has learned
that the oldest. Roman coins
struck from the alloy contained
the least copper and the most
zinc. In the 250 years during
which the Romans used brass,
there was a steady increase in
the amount of zinc in the coins.
He pointed out that by deter
mining the zinc content of a coin
it was possible to establish
roughly the earliest date at
which a brass coin could have
been made.
"The earliest known Roman
brass coins were issued under
Julius Caesar about 45 B.C., but
the abundant issue of such coins
did not begin until about 2 B.C.

brown Swiss in Switzerland,
once. But Hillevi learns right
fast. When I toe her into the
drug store i$ the Statler hotel
and ordered a black cow she said
"Wow!" and smacked her pretty
red lis over a ball of chocolate
ice cream, with a fizzed coke
pitched in the cup.
Perfect Measurements
The 21-year-old cutie is tagged
as perfect, because her measure
ments are. Something that Chris
tian Dior would like to wrap a
gown around.
She is five feet seven inches
tall. She weighs 129 pounds. Her
eyes are blue, her locks are
blonde and most important, the
rest of her adds up to: Bust 36,
wist 23, and hips 36. Match that
anywhere. And if you do you can
add on Hellevi's chart that she
has grace and charm and not
only that knows how to handle
reporters.
I thought it would be a good
stunt to have the photographer
gag it up and have me lift up the
young lady so I could say that
with "Miss Universe" up there I
had the "weight of the world" on
my shoulders.
She thought that was too cor
ny. So we posed her in a sweater
job with her hands caressing an
illuminated globe. It probably
was prettier that way, but the
photographer didn't boot me for
thinking.
One of Miss Rombin's prizes
was a tryout with Universal-International
Pictures. She made
her debut in a small role in "The
Benny Goodman Story."
She speaks very good English,
and in addition to Swedish, she
wags a fancy tongue in Spanish,
German and French. She was
considerably better than a back
yard variety of gal athlete back
home. She was girl's high school
high-jump champion with a
bounce of 1.48 meters (however
high up that is) and once had a

Jail Rioters Cooled
Roseburg W.R) Five teen
age boys rioted in the Douglas
county jail here Sunday night,
then slept in the sub-freezing
weather after law enforcement
officers had quelled the disturb
ance. The youths, lodged in the jail j
on charges of car theft and burg- i
lary, smashed furniture and!
windows and set fire to mat- j
tresses before they, could be
subdued.
Damage to the jail was esti
mated at $150 by Sheriff Ira
Byrd.
After the riot had been
quelled, officials left the five in
the same cell with the 25 de
gree elements streaming in from
the smashed windows.

Calif., all were students in the
school of forestry.
The suspension, as handed
