CURRIER CANINE PRINT VALUABLE TO DOG LOVER
Jim was telling me about
Duke, a pointer he had back in
the early 1930s and which had
been accidentally killed by a
trigger-happy rabbit hunter.
"Anyway," he went on, I
was mighty unhappy over it, es-
pecially since I didn't have any
picture of Duke, and so one day
when I happened to see that
print on a barber shop wall, I
wanted to buy it.
The print Jim referred to hung
on the wall opposite the fire-
place. It showed four pointers
going through a field.
"That light-colored one in the
left foreground is Duke," Jim
said. "It looks so like him he
might have posed for it, except
it was made over 100 years ago."
As I suspected, the picture,
a small one, was by Nathaniel

The main differences in the

There was a feel of arrested
motion to it as if one had come
suddenly upon a window that
opened on an autumn landscape
and in another century.
"I didn't know what a Cur-

it, and neither did the barber,
Jim continued, "but both of us

"As a result, I paid his $100

of the leading price guides in
the country today list it at S25

Shortly after they were issued,
however, a sizeable demand
arose fr 20-cent stamps evi-
dently so many of the others had
to be used on a given letter tnat
there was comparatively little
room left for the address
Accordingly, two of the 5-cent
plates were hammered out and
re-engraved to 20 cents. Later,
when the demand for the higher
denomination had subsided, the
plates were hammered out again
and re-engraved as 5-centers
once more.
The first of these St. Louis is-
sues I ever saw was one of the
5-cent type, greenish in color
and on a well yellowed woven
paper. It was found by a friend
of mine while going through
some family papers shortly af-
ter he had got out of the Navy
in 1946.
The stamp was still on its
envelope. He got $500 for it.
Today its value is listed at $600,
pegs I guess they were hickory
anyway.
Larry had found the piece in
an old barn and bought it for $5. j
