Mrs. Fred Purdin won first
at bridge and Mrs. Ira Canfield
scored first in canasta during
a social meeting of the Scottish
Rite Women's club Monday in
Medford Masonic temple.
Guests for the evening were
Mrs. Lola Vogel, Mrs. John Dick
son, Mrs. Clayton George and
Mrs. Menno Bachmann.
Scottish Rite men joined the
women for refreshments which
were served on tables decorated
with pastel streamers in a
spring theme. Community sing
ing during the refreshments was
led by Fred Gaten and Herb Al
ford. Hostesses for the evening were
Mrs. E. W. Pease, Mrs. Gail Buf
fington and Mrs. George Red
head. The next club meeting will be
February 13 when a 6:30 p.m.,
potluck dinner will be served.

ist for a concert of the Philhar
monic Society of Southern Ore
gon Sunday, January, 29, began
her musical education at ,the
age of three.
By the age of seven she had
prepared two concert selections,
the Mozart Piano Concerto and
Mothers March
Plans Announced
For Eagle Point
Eagle Point Eagle. Point
Lions club auxiliary has organ
ized plans for a Mothers march
for the March of Dimes drive to
be held Tuesday, January 31 dur
ing the evening. The vicinities
to be covered include Browns
boro, Camp White, Ajax road,
Long Mountain road and Crater
Lake highway, in addition to the
city of Eagle Point and adjacent
roads.
The meetine at which the
nlans were made was held at
the home of Mrs. J. E. Olsen.
Mrs. Vern Bonebrake presided.
Persons of the vicinities men
tioned are asked to turn on their
porch lights as a signal that they
wish to donate.
The women entertained Fri
day morning for Mrs. John
Croskell, who is leaving the dis
trict. She was given handker
chiefs by each who attended and
refreshments were served by
Mrs. Bonebrake, the hostess, and
Mrs. Lee Hayes.
Mrs. Don Geren was appoint
ed secretary to fill the-vacancy
made by Mrs. Croskell's depart
ure. After the Mother's march
Tuesday the group will meet at
the home of Mrs. James Clarke
for refreshments.
Mrs. Olsen served refresh
ments after a board meeting.
Jefferson School
Family Dinner
Set For Tonight
A fund-raising potluck dinner
and fun night is planned for to
night by Jefferson Paret-Teach-er
association. Dinner will be
served buffet style at 6:30 to be
followed by games with parents
and children participating. In
formal dress , is stressed and
there will be a cover charge per
family.
Rolls, beverage and service
will be furnished by the associa
tion and potluck dishes are re
quired of each family to serve 8
to 10 people, the type determin
ed by the grade in which the stu
dent is enrolled. Grades 1 and
3 are to take hot dishes, 2 and
4 salads, 5 and 6 and special
room pie, cake or cupcakes.
Westside Livestock Club
Westside 4-H Livestock club
will have a cake sale Jan. 28 at
Paulsen's Thrift market in Cen
tral Point. The proceeds are to
go 'to the March of Dimes.

To Be Soloist
Von Weber's "Koncertstuck"
which she played with municip
al orchestras at Stockton, Sac
ramento and Santa Rose, Calif.
At the age of eight years the
pianist went to New York where
she won first award in the an
nual Olga Samaroff Stockowski
scholarship, and she studied for
a year with this master teacher.
She won the award a second
year, and was invited to enter
the competition a third year, but
was forced to return to Calif
ornia by family illness.
Shortly after this the' Carters
left northern California for Los
Angeles where Miss Carter con
tinued her studies and where
she joined the California Junior
symphony, serving as pianist and
soloist with this group which was
conducted by Peter Meremblum
At the age of 13 Miss Carter
entered the Young Artists' con
test in Los Angeles, sponsored
by Radio Station KFI, winning
the first award for instrument
alists. Shortly thereafter she ap
peared with the Los Angeles
Philharmonic orchestra, with Al
fred Wallenstein conducting.
During the same year the pianist
also won a composition prize and
her work, entitled "Cinderella
Suite" has been played by many
orchestras, including the Stan
dard Hour symphony.
Miss Carter has played under
the baton of such noted conduc
tors as Pierre Monteux, Eugene
Ormandy, Bruno Walter and Al
fred Wallenstein.
Sunday's concert is set for 3
p.m. at Medford Senior High
school auditorium, and tickets
are on sale at the Music Mart,
and Purucker's Music store or
may be obtained at the box of
fice Sunday afternoon. Informa
tion concerning the concert or
the ticket sale may be obtained
from Mrs. Tom Popham, tele
phone 2-5830. Mrs. Popham is
chairman of the Philharmonic
guild, organized to provide sup
port for the orchestra.

Blood Bank Aided
Prospect A letter written In
Braille from blind children in
the state school for the blind at
Salem was received by' Prospect
Lady Lions thanking the women
for a gift box sent to the chil
dren. The letter was trans
cribed by members of the com
mittee in charge and was read
during a dinner meeting January
11 at Mill Creek cafe.
A special meeting was called
for January 18 when 16 mem
bers of the auxiliary met to dis
cuss the blood bank unit which
will call at Shady Cove Tues
day, February 7 from 2 to 7
p.m. Groups were formed for
contacting others in the vicin
ity asking them to donate blood.
Ages for donors is 18 to 59 and
persons who donate also should
weigh 110 pounds or more.

State Farm Wage Rates
Reach All-Time High
Corvallis Oregon's farm wage
rates reached an all-time high
on Jan. 1 according to Oregon
State college agricultural econ
omists. The farm wage rates, without
board and room, averaged $1.14
per hour in' Oregon. This was
topped only by Connecticut with
$1.18 an hour and Washington
with S1.17. It was tied by Rhode
Island.

First Anniversary
Members of the Baby Sitting
club of Medford observed the
first anniversary of the organi
zation January 20 when they
met at the Geigle home.' It was
reported that 140 Medford fam

taining persons . to stay with
