put on weight.

er to bring me my food, I can
easily gain a pound. Other per
sons put on weight by adding

empt gasoline used on farms
from the two-cent federal tax
cleared two big hurdles in Con
gress yesterday.
The House Ways and Means
committee gave the proposal un
animous approval and the House
itself agreed to take it up Mon
day. It was the first congressional
action on any part of the nine
point farm program Mr. Eisen
hower submitted Jan. 9.

eat much. I really eat less than
my brother and sister, and they
are thin." Because it is a chemi
cal impossibility to gain weight
if one is not eating more food
than one needs to maintain ac
tivity and nutrition, I know that
these people must be eating too
much, probably between their
meals. They must be nibbling,
or they must be drinking bottled
drinks that are full of sugar,
or they must be eating too much
during the morning and after
noon stretch, or they must be
raiding the refrigerator at night.
Excess Fat Stored
If, in the morning when I get
on the scales, I find that I have
gained a pound or two, I know
of no alibi. I just know that
during the preceding day I have
eaten more than I needed, and
I have stored the excess as fat.
If I am to take it right off, for
the next two days I must eat
less than I would like to eat.
The big secret in reducing is to
eat much less starch and fat and
sugar, and more of salads and
vegetables and fruit. Always it
is well to take, each day, some
meat or chicken or fish to
maintain strength and an egg
and a glass of skim milk to get
needed vitamins and minerals.
The person on a reduction
diet must remember that 60 per
cent of alcohol is burned in the
body as a food, and hence if
one drinks several cocktails or
highballs or beers one can gain.
People should get over the
idea that they can reduce by
exercising. As I remember, some
one once showed that in order
to take off a pound of weight,
one would have to walk about
eight miles.

End Rents! Business
Washington (U.R) The gov
ernment has announced that In
ternational Business Machines
Corp. has agreed to break up
its vast tabulating machine rent
al business in settlement of an
anti-trust suit.
The firm must also release cer
tain patents it owns, some on a
royalty free basis and others for
"reasonable" royalties, and pro
vide American industry with the
technical know-how to operate
the machines.
In the future, the firm must
offer for sale all new. tabulating
and electronic data processing
machines that it produces.
The consent judgment, filed in
New York City, also permits
persons now leasing IBM ma
chines to buy them "for a rea
sonable" figure.
The original 1952 suit against
the firm charged it had "monop-
