Chene hurled a challenge at
Montana.
Bull Montana, the one man
wrecking crew from Toledo,
clobbered both George Drake
and Thor Hagen last week and
is rated by the fans as the tough
est guy to hit these parts since
Leo Wallick. Montana is vicious
with a piledriver and the atomic
drop. Chene, the Texas TV star,
was sensation! in his debut
when he dumped Henry Lenz.
He is as fast and has color and
ability.
The meeting will be the first
between this pair of natural
rivaB and could be a donny-
brook.
Pedro Godoy, a talented new
comer, will be introduced in
the . one-hour semi-main. Cal
Roberts will attempt a warm
reception. Big and rough, Godoy
is rated on par with Killer
Kameroff.

Yacht Race Today
San Diego (U.R) The yacht
Legend, out of Los Angeles,, stood
a good chance of finishing the
winner today going into the clos
ing stretch of the 1431-mile San
Diego to Acapulco handicap
yacht race.
The Coast Guard reported the
50-foot Los Angeles Yachting
Club sloop, which as a 21-hour-
21-minute handicap allowance,
was grouped with John Scripps
San Diego ketch Novia del Mar,
30 miles behind the actual lead

the Legend's favorable position,

dwindled from 49 to 32 points.

votes and an unusually high second-place
total of 307 points. By
defeating Villanova and Xavier
of Ohio last week, Dayton
achieved the season's longest
winning , streak. The Flyers'
next test will be a tough one
against lOth-ranked Louisville.
San Francisco, which now has
led the ratings for eight straight
weeks, resumes competition
next Saturday night against
California. The Dons will set a
major college record for con
secutive victories if they beat
California.
Illlinois and Louisville each
received one first-place vote in
this week's balloting.
The Illini (10-1) and Kentucky
(10-2) each moved up one notch,
while North Carolina State
slipped to fifth following its sec
ond setback in 15 games. Tem
ple, with an 11-0 record, follow
ed North Carolina, with Vander
bilt, Southern Methodist and
Louisville completing the top 10.

week, Vanderbilt (13-1) . and
SMU (13-2) each slipped two
notches, while Louisville (15-1)

Pettit Takes
Scoring Lead

and Clyde Lovellette swapped
the National Basketball associa
tion scoring lead today for the
17th time in the last eight weeks,
Pettit coming out with first place
this time by a margin of 14
points.
The 17th exchange of the lead
between the two stars resulted
from Pettit's 39-point perform
ance for St. Louis against Syra
cuse on Sunday, while Lovalette
was scoring only' 15 for Minne
apolis against New York.
But Paul Arizin, former scor
ing champion from the Philadel
phia Warriors, is starting to
barge into what has been a two
man battle so far this season.
Arizin actually has passed Lov
ellette on the basis of average
points per game to take second
place in that category behind
Pettit. I
Pettit leads both in total
points with 942 and average
with 23.6. Lovellette is second in
total points with 928, third in
average with 22.1. Arizin is third
in total points with 879, but sec
ond in average with 22.5. Lovel
lette has played two games more
than Pettit, three more than
Arizin.
LINCOLN. JACKSON LEAD
Lincoln and Jackson with two
wins and no losses each are
leaders in the city grade school
junior varsity basketball league.
In last week's tussles Lincoln
bounced Roosevelt 28 to 3 and
Jackson won from Jefferson 17

dropped a 43 to 66 game to

Guard in play last night. Phoe
nix is protesting on grounds that
Company A was using ineligible
players, according to league officials.
Company A took an early lead,
which was increased to 33 to 13
at halftime. Vern Parent led
Company A's scoring with 19
points, and Furry and Yarnell
tallied 12 each for Phoenix.
In another league game last
night, YMCA whipped Butte
Falls', 101 to 68, behind the scor
ing of Larue Smith, who tallied
22 points. Dick Webber contrib
uted 18, Dick Wooton had 16,
and John Niles and Dennis Davis
tallied 13 and 10, respectively.
YMCA was leading 56 to 41 at
halftime.

at 7 o'clock tonight in the first
of two city loop games at Mc
Loughlin junior high. Phoenix
and Hawkinson Tire Tread will

weight crown," after directing
him to his 17th straight profes
sional victory in a sensational

Goldman, trainer of heavy

as the muscular 21-year-old Ne
gro was staggered seven times
but came on to win another
unanimous decision over bomb
er Jerry Luedee of New Haven,
Conn., in one of the most bruis
ing slugfests ever staged at St.

Calhoun, who had taken a
four-round verdict over brown
haired, 22-year-old Luedee in a
preliminary at Madison Square
garden on Nov. 26, 1954, had
the tired Connecticut dynamiter
floundering in the late rounds

head.
In some of the hectic sessions,
each was on "rubber legs," and
it seemed that one of them must

scoring race lead in total points
today but Willie Marshall of
Pittsburgh and Ken Wharram.of
Buffalo broke his monopoly in
the goals scored and playmaking
departments.
Toppazzini had 72 points on
29 goals and 43 assists to head
the field by the still comfortable
margin of 13 points. Marshall,
who was second with a 59 point
total, seized the goals ' scored
leadership, however, on the
strength of his fourth "hat trick"
of the season; while Ken Whar
ram, placing third with 58,
forced Toppazzini to share first
place in the playmaking depart
ment with 43 each.
Dune Fisher of Hershey was
